Patient Access Representative - General Surgery

Patient Access Representative – General Surgery Position : Full Time, 1.00 FTE, Day shift. Salary Range : $24.54 – $33.14 per hour. Job Summary Assists in coordinating activities between scheduling, insurance verification, and pre-certification. Acts as a clinical liaison with physician practices interacting with pre-visit services. Responsibilities Pre-register and register patients with accurate demographic and financial data; may use mobile cart as needed. Collect patient balances, co-payments, co‑insurance, and other payment types. Verify coverage and ensure all insurance requirements are met, obtaining prior authorization and/or referrals as appropriate before patient arrival. Respond to customer inquiries. Assist with departmental coverage as needed. Manage daily appointment schedules, including reminder calls and contacting referrals. Transport patients using escort or wheeled transport equipment. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma (Preferred) or equivalent. Minimum of 1 year of medical office or related customer service experience (Required). Strong background in customer service may be considered in lieu of medical office or related experience. Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) (Preferred). Skills Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and CPT/ICD‑10 coding (Preferred). Knowledge of insurance processes and regulations (Preferred). Conflict management (Required). Excellent time management skills, meeting time‑sensitive deadlines (Required). Good customer service and interpersonal skills (Required). Location‑Specific Responsibilities Ketchikan Medical Center: Manage ED incoming phone calls; may provide switchboard coverage. Monitor OB Prosec/McKinley alarm system. Assist with Cardiac Rehab departmental charge entry. Southeast Alaska – PHMG: Work with healthcare team to obtain VA/Tricare or State of Alaska Medicaid Authorization for medical care and/or travel, including air or ground transportation and lodging/meals for patients and escorts (if applicable). Communicate with care team, VA/Tricare, or State of Alaska Medicaid travel on behalf of patient and referring provider. Maintain VA and/or State of Alaska log; accurately track authorization status and voucher usage. Working Conditions Consistently operate computer and office equipment. Exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or negligible force frequently. Sedentary work, predominantly in an office environment. Requires clear visual acuity for data preparation, transcribing, and computer use. Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
