Distribution Engineer

Job TitleThis position will offer you the opportunity to work in a project team environment and lead other engineers and designers using your knowledge of engineering and design practices to:Prepare/Review construction sketches and details for:Overhead and underground network services (4 kV through 34 kV)Structural analysesShort circuit and voltage drop calculationsBill of MaterialCost EstimatesTraffic control plans and/or permit drawingsWork on project teams with other engineers involved in the design of new upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities.Participate in Process Hazard Analysis and Design Reviews.Work directly with the client representative to ask and answer questions related to the distribution design.Analyze, design or review priority feeds.Support maintenance and recapitalization of distribution components.Plan modifications to the system as well as designing and overseeing complex tasks.Develop work packages and provide construction support, when necessary.Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.Develop your career via peer-learning by way of S&L's systems of process and associated "Communities of Practice."This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of spending three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.Dependent upon your location, this opportunity offers a generous relocation package.QualificationsWe do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.Essential skills and experience:This position requires a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.5 or more years of experience with electric utility distribution or relevant experience to be able to review work by others.Knowledgeable in physical distribution design methods and their application.Knowledgeable in applicable codes, standards, and distribution software programs including AutoCAD, ArcGIS, PoleForeman, etc.Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, NEC, ANSI, IEEE, GIS/GWD.Experience with complex overhead and underground distribution projects (120/208V through 34 kV).PLS CADD experience, highly preferred.Strong communication skills.Able to lead a project team.Valued but not required skills and experience:Professional Engineering Registration or able to obtain a PE within 5 years.Experience in utility distribution inspections and/or construction.Familiarity with various distribution design/analysis software.Familiarity with GIS software.AI & Automation at Sargent & LundyIn this role, we expect people to be willing or able to lead others who use modern tools:You are expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.Award-Winning BenefitsAt Sargent & Lundy, we care about the health and well-being of our employees.
