️ Job Overview
A CNC Lathe Operator specializes in turning operations —machining cylindrical parts using computer-controlled lathes. They interpret technical drawings, Operates machines, and ensure's precision production of metal or plastic components.
Key Responsibilities- Operate CNC lathes (turning centers)
- Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings
- Load raw materials and monitor machining processes
- Adjust machine offsets, tooling, and speeds for optimal performance
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using measuring tools
- Maintain tight tolerances (often within ±0.002 inches or better)
- Change inserts, tooling, and fixtures as needed
- Troubleshoot machining issues (tool wear, chatter, dimensional errors)
- Keep machines clean and follow preventive maintenance procedures
- Document production runs and quality checks
- CNC turning centers (2-axis, multi-axis, live tooling)
- Controls like Fanuc, Haas, Mazak
- Measuring tools: micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators
- Tooling: inserts, boring bars, drills, reamers
- Strong understanding of CNC turning principles
- Ability to read and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
- Knowledge of feeds, speeds, and cutting material
- Blueprint reading and math skills (trigonometry often helpful)
- Attention to detail and quality control
- High school diploma or GED (minimum)
- Technical certificate or associate degree in machining (preferred)
- 3–5+ years CNC lathe experience (varies by employer)
- Apprenticeships or on-the-job training are common pathways
- Standing for long periods
- Lifting materials (often 25–50 lbs)
- Exposure to noise, coolant, and metal chips
- PPE required (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.)
- Experienced: $20–$24/hr

- Manufacturing Engineer
- Quality Inspector / CMM Programmer
- Experience with live tooling or Swiss-style lathes
- CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360)
- Multi-axis machining (4-axis / 5-axis)
- Lean manufacturing / Six Sigma exposure
