PAY FOR POSITION: PSE Salary Schedule Level 7 - $ 27.43 (25-26 PSE SALARY SCHEDULE)

Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Paraeducator Certificate of the state mandated Paraeducator Certificate Program per State requirements. Paraeducator Certificate Program is dependent upon State funding.

IMPORTANT: In order to be considered for an interview for this instructional paraeducator position you must meet the following federal minimum employment requirements.
  • Must be 18 years of age; and
  • Hold high school diploma or its equivalent; and one of the following
    • Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test
    • AA degree
    • Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education
    • Completion of registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries

GENERAL SUMMARY
This position's responsibilities are to provide behavior support to students as directed by the behavior specialist and other appropriate personnel. Responsibilities vary with assignment, but typically include tutoring students in prescribed learning activities, providing comprehensive behavioral support to students individually or in small groups, assisting with school and classroom management, and maintaining student records. The Behavior Support Paraeducator is an itinerant and may be assigned to any student as required to provide student support where needed.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending upon the individual assignment, the Behavior Support Paraeducator may perform all or a combination of the following:


1. Instructs students individually or in small groups to affect behavior change; promotes student understanding of materials presented. Works as a team member with behavior specialists, teachers, intervention specialists, school counselors, school psychologists and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed.


2. Assist with the development and implementation of behavioral IEP goals, Safety Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Intervention Plans. Implements behavior programs designed to make positive and appropriate changes so the student can learn to be independent without ongoing support from the Behavior Support.


3. Assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including Safety Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). Assist the certificated staff member in the implementation of behavioral and academic services


4. Ensures consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts, monitors physical and emotional changes in students and reports to appropriate personnel. Collects and record student data in order to report learning or other difficulties encountered by students to the certificated staff member


5. Monitors students both in and out of the classroom. Assesses crisis situations and defuses situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques. Assists teacher with classroom management; ensures that students stay on task; discipline students as authorized according to building discipline procedure.


6. Consults with behavior specialist, teacher, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provides information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns. Prepare teaching aids as directed by the certificated staff member


7. Prepare teaching aids as directed by the certificated staff member. Assist with test administration. Collects, reviews, and records student assignments; returns assignments. Provides feedback to certificated staff member, parents and students.


8. Ability to work with and supervise students. Reinforces appropriate behaviors and redirects negative behaviors.


9. Ability to work cooperatively with other staff members. Ability to accept direction, responsibility, and work independently.


OTHER FUNCTIONS


9. Operate instructional equipment. May duplicate and distribute classroom materials and projects.


10. Maintains physical appearance of instructional area, hallways, and other assigned areas; straightens chairs and tables; puts away materials after use.


11. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position and pursuant to the contract.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to Director/Assistant Director of Special Services. Receives guidance from Building Principal, intervention specialist and/or assigned certificated staff.


MENTAL DEMANDS
Classroom and school environment. May experience frequent interruptions. Required to deal with a wide range of student behavior, academic abilities and learning styles, which may include angry or distraught students.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Required to crouch, crawl, bend or work in other positions besides sitting or standing. Required to meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines to include IEPs, BIPs and other meetings.


Passage of a pre-employment physical and testing is required of this position (the district assumes the cost).


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience
Associate's Degree preferred or education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment. Experience working in special education programs and/or at-risk students. Successful completion of a 40-hour Behavior Technician Training.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of physical therapy. Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively. Ability to learn effective instructional and therapy techniques and strategies for students with occupational therapy needs, including those with behavior disorders and learning disabilities. Ability to keyboard. Ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner. Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations. Ability to organize activities. Ability to follow and give instructions. Ability to be fair and consistent when working with children. Ability to learn the use of microcomputers and adaptive software. Ability to learn the operation of educational equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.


Licenses/Special Requirements
Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Valid Washington state driver's license. Valid first aid certification preferred. Highly Qualified preferred. Right Response training.
