Tohono O’odham Community College is seeking a Student Support Specialist I at our Phoenix Center to join our team. Working in close collaboration with the Phoenix Center Director, you will play a hands‑on role in running the center and ensuring our students receive optimal support. You will serve as an advisor, recruiter, and connector—helping students navigate registration, linking them with vital financial aid and tutoring services, and conducting outreach in the broader Phoenix area. If you want to help shape an inviting, dynamic learning space (both physically and virtually) for TOCC students, this is the position for you! Hiring Rate Range: $20.65 - $22.59 What You’ll Do: Advise students on curriculum and academic programs, assist with class registration, and resolve issues promptly. Conduct local community outreach, recruit new students, and collaborate with Phoenix partners to help grow the center. Develop and distribute marketing materials via email and the TOCC website. Maintain high‑quality communication with students, faculty, and community members via phone, text, email, and social media. Ensure daily smooth operations at the center. Create purchase requisitions, place orders, and monitor the center’s budget. Draft professional letters, memos, and non‑routine administrative correspondence while maintaining student confidentiality. Represent TOCC at public events, serve on committees, attend training sessions, and make center presentations. Actively support the T-So:son (Our Core Values), T-Wohocudadag (Our Beliefs), T-Apedag (Our Well‑Being), T-Pi:k Elida (Our Deepest Respect), and I-We:mta (Working Together). Position Requirements What You’ll Bring: Associate degree or higher. At least one (1) year of experience working in a higher education environment. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. Two to three (2–3) years of higher education experience. Knowledge and understanding of the history and contemporary issues facing Native people. Ability to speak and understand O’odham and/or Spanish. Key Skills & Abilities: Top‑tier interpersonal skills with the ability to manage difficult situations and support students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work well in group problem‑solving environments and quickly identify alternative solutions. Comfortable compiling data, generating reports, and utilizing modern communication/administrative software. Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and consistently on time. Licensing & Background Check Valid state Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Must successfully pass a criminal background check. Physical & Environmental Demands Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to extreme desert heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) during outreach activities. Rated for Medium Work (exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, 30 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly to move objects). Requires close visual acuity for computer work/data analysis, frequent typing/fingering, repetitive wrist or hand motions, and clear verbal communication and hearing.
