Title Registered Nurse (RN) - Observation Unit - Bronson Methodist Hospital - Full-time 12N Location Bronson Methodist Hospital, Michigan Description Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the unit, and the Michigan Public Health Code, the registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by the following: utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation and evaluation; coordinating the care provided by other professionals; delegating selected acts, tasks or functions that fall within the scope of professional nursing practice and the abilities of patient care assistants and universal service assistants; providing selected aspects of physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice as appropriate given the patient's level of acuity and complexity of care required; and documenting and communicating during each tour of duty the patient's response to care provided, consumption of resources and anticipated needs. Responsibilities Perform nursing assessment, plan, diagnose, implement and evaluate for patients, coordinating care with other professionals. Delegate nursing tasks within professional scope to patient care assistants and universal service assistants. Provide physical care within scope of practice based on acuity and complexity. Document and communicate patient responses and anticipated needs during each duty tour. Utilize data from various computer systems and equipment to set an appropriate plan of action. Communicate verbally, in writing and electronically for patient care and interdisciplinary collaboration. Perform mental and visual tasks requiring alertness and concentration; handle lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional heavier tasks. Collect comprehensive patient data; assess physical and developmental needs; analyze assessment data for patient problems; confirm with patient and family. Document nursing history and age-appropriate physical/emotional needs and strengths. Monitor vital signs to assess condition and detect deviations. Determine patient problems, confirm them, and document expected outcomes and plan of care. Associate patient/family input when defining outcomes, incorporating values, ethics and cultural considerations. Coordinate discharge planning for outcomes not achieved. Incorporate clinical pathways into individualized intervention plans. Maintain awareness of patient comfort and safety needs. Initiate patient education plans per individualized needs. Delegate patient care interventions and evaluate their effectiveness. Evaluate progress toward attaining expected outcomes, documenting patient responses. Participate in quality improvement activities; use results to initiate changes in nursing practice. Engage in ongoing educational activities related to appropriate knowledge and professional issues. Maintain professional records evidencing competency and continuing education. Conduct self-evaluation, identify strengths and areas for development. Participate in systematic peer review when appropriate; share knowledge and skills with peers. Build compassionate and caring relationships with peer colleagues and maintain a supportive work environment. Collaborate with patient, family and interdisciplinary team to effect change and generate positive outcomes. Incorporate ethical provisions in all practice areas; deliver care preserving patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights. Use research findings to improve patient health and practice environment; participate in research activities at the appropriate level of education. Consider safety, effectiveness, cost and impact of care when planning services; assign or delegate tasks based on patient condition and complexity. Assist patient and family in becoming informed consumers about treatment options, costs, risks and benefits. Provide leadership in professional practice setting and community; participate in nursing councils, hospital and unit committees; attend at least 50% of unit staff meetings. Work to create and maintain a professional, healthy work environment; represent Bronson in local, regional or national settings. Interpret procedure cards, assess case cart for supplies prior to procedures; identify missing equipment and acquire needed supplies. Apply knowledge of operative procedures and physician preferences; anticipate physicians' needs. Observe changes in patient's condition indicating potential problems; update case information accordingly. Remind staff of proper equipment use; discourage improper handling. Lifeguard surgical team needs; anticipate potential needs and take appropriate actions. Serve as specialist and resource for circulators regarding positioning devices, specialty equipment, implants. Assume after‑hour call on a rotational basis. Perform scrub duties in multiple services (e.g., neuro, ortho STII); perform spinal fusions in both services. For HDU Department only: Additional on‑call requirements over regular hours. For Bronson Lakeview and Bronson South Haven Hospitals: Complete Workday CBL – "Swing beds"; understand documentation differences and care requirements for swing bed patients. Cover shifts at Lakeview or SouthHaven as needed based on acuity and staffing. Qualifications Associate's degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred, must obtain within 8 years of hire. Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan. Licensed to renew BSN within 8 years of hire; otherwise employment terminated. BLS certification required upon completion of core orientation; critical care or ALS and other certifications may be required. Special certifications: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC, FD/Part‑time); Emergency Department: SALT triage, ESI Triage, NIH Stroke Scale within 90 days; Labor & Delivery: Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification within 6 months. Current Michigan driver’s license and proof of insurance. Ability to read, interpret, analyze data from computer systems and equipment to develop action plans. Strong verbal, written and electronic communication skills.
