Department Summary:
Wolverine Wellness advances community and personal well-being through partnerships and advocacy and is guided by five core actions of health promotion as outlined in the Okanagan Charter: prevention, personal skill development, strengthening community action, creating supportive environments, and policy/system level change management.
Wolverine Wellness is the hub for campus well-being and offers programs and resources such as: U-M Collegiate Recovery Program, wellness coaching, Well-being Academy trainings, ALA 240 wellness course, health equity grants, health and well-being workshops and campaigns, high-risk planning and prevention, PaWWs and Relax therapy dog program, safer sex supplies, sleep kits, and more. The unit helps to socialize the institution-wide multi-dimensional model of well-being and provides backbone leadership for the U-M Well-being Collective.
Position Summary:
This role works in partnership for innovative health promotion initiatives to support the well-being of individual students, student groups, and the campus community. The position focuses on major wellness programs, such as social prescribing, wellness check-ins in foundational courses, and personalized (1:1) wellness coaching.
Please note: This is a three-year Limited Term position.
Key Responsibilities include:
Deliver 1:1 and group wellness coaching using motivational interviewing techniques and following the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching guidelines in a variety of areas that impact student well-being (e.g., sleep, transition to college, alcohol/other drugs, sexual health, body image, stress reduction).
Support and collaborate on Experience Rx social prescribing programming, connecting students with activities that improve well-being (examples: ArtRx, NatureRx, MovementRx, NourishRx, ServiceRx).
Facilitate brief wellness coaching check-ins with wellness check-in intervention in foundational academic courses.
Responsibilities *
65% Individual Consultations and Brief Interventions
Conducts 1:1 wellness coaching sessions (30-60 minute brief interventions) with students, including topics not limited to:
Holistic well-being, 1:1 and groups
Social prescribing - including surveys, conversations, and referrals
Wellness Coaching Check-ins - brief coaching model for the academic environment
15% Program Development
Develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of health promotion programs, events, and initiatives as part of a comprehensive health promotion mission, vision, and prevention strategy, with particular focus on the college culture and student population.
Incorporates health equity principles and practices into all health promotion efforts
Develop and conduct trainings and presentations for faculty, staff and students about wellness coaching, including current student well-being and harm reduction issues.
10% Communications and Community Relations
Collaborate with key stakeholders across campus (i.e., faculty, staff, students, parents/families, leadership) to implement a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health and well-being for students.
Coordinate, participate, and provide staffing and resources for Student Life health and well-being teams and committees.
10% Assessment and Evaluation
Participate in strategic needs assessment of the University of Michigan campus community to help guide the unit's work with a specific focus on social prescribing, wellness check-ins, and the broader wellness coaching program.
Assist with developing goals and measurable objectives for various programs, services, and initiatives, and evaluates effectiveness.
Required Qualifications *
Bachelor's degree required from a four-year institution.
A minimum of two years of experience delivering 1:1 interventions (peer, wellness coaching, counseling) with emphasis on motivational interviewing as a student or professional staff.
Experience using behavior change theories and models in the development and implementation of evidence-based programs/initiatives and/or wellness coaching.
Previous work experience in public health-related issues (alcohol and other drug issues, sexual health, sleep, stress, body image, well-being, resilience, etc.)
Desired Qualifications *
Master's degree required in Public Health, Higher Education, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field
Three to five years of experience in wellness coaching.
Previous work experience in a college campus environment.
National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching board certification or International Coaching Federation board certification, or in the process of attainment.
Public speaking experience.
Creating, collecting, analyzing, and communicating data.
Research and evaluation experience.
Motivational Interviewing competency.
Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills in verbal and written communications.Demonstrated skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, training, small group facilitation, and individual sessions.
Demonstrated skills in critically reviewing health and well-being-related materials, as well as gathering, compiling, and synthesizing information to develop health promotion initiatives and educational materials for a diverse group of students.
Program development and implementation experience.
Familiarity with technology (e.g., Microsoft Office applications and web-based technology tools)
Ability to think critically and solve problems, as well as handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Good judgment and ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
Demonstrated skill and strong knowledge of public health prevention and intervention strategies.
Demonstrated cultural humility and inclusiveness in working with populations of diverse cultures and identities in addressing issues of diversity, health, and social justice.
Demonstrated emotional intelligence skills (self-awareness, self-management, empathy and relationship management).
Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:
- Responsible for helping to monitor relevant budget items for Wolverine Wellness
Working Conditions:
Evening and weekend hours required throughout the academic year on occasion. Hybrid working environment (three or more days in office and two or fewer days remote).
Three-year Limited Term position
Physical Requirements:
- The incumbent is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, and occasionally move/transport items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Additional Information
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2026 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Relocation will not be offered for this role.
