Full-Time Instructional Laboratory Technician (Welding)

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Instructional Laboratory Technician (Welding) in the Instruction division. Salary placement will be on Range 25 of Classified Salary Schedule B. Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($5,293.00 / $5,616.00 / $5,948.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range. Probationary period for new Classified Represented employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

Position Description: Reporting to and under the supervision of the Dean, School of Applied Technologies, with daily task coordination provided by the department chair and working in collaboration with the department chair, department coordinators and faculty, performs a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation and maintenance of Welding laboratories, classroom, tool rooms and related areas; operates welding and metalworking equipment and performs tasks to process instructional materials; provides information and technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students. Performs other duties as assigned.

Example of Duties

Essential Duties:

1. Supports the safe operation and maintenance of the instructional welding laboratory and related areas; performs specialized technical duties to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
2. Assists department faculty in the organization, preparation, presentation, and use of instructional supplies and materials for Welding Technologies to assure efficient instructional operations. Assists in setting up demonstrations requiring special equipment and/or tools.
3. Performs operational and maintenance tasks in welding laboratories; performs specialized and technical duties to ensure efficient lab operations.
4. Assists individual and groups of students in an instructional setting. Responds to questions concerning assigned subject matter and other related concerns and issues. Orients, monitors, and assists students in the proper use of supplies, materials, tools, and related equipment in accordance with established guidelines and operational procedures.
5. Assists the department chair with the procurement, receipt, and processing of supplies, materials, and equipment. Maintains inventory records for instructional and non-instructional shop supplies using Microsoft Office applications. Conducts catalog research and contacts vendors to purchase supplies and materials necessary to maintain lab, workshop, and tool rooms. Transfers necessary supplies between worksite, Valencia and additional Welding Program locations as needed.
6. Maintains assigned classrooms, labs, workshops, and tool room environments in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Assures the safe, efficient, and proper handling of tools including but not limited to hand and power tools, instructional equipment, and chemicals (solids, oils, solvents, and gases). Updates, implements, and monitors all laboratory, workshop, and tool/equipment safety procedures including personal protective gear (PPE).
7. Ensures the proper disposal of scrap and waste materials in accordance with district guidelines. Understands and implements safety protocols and procedures.
8. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as word processing and data entry, inventory management, correspondence and report development, answering telephones, picking-up and distributing mail, processing and tracking purchase requisitions, answering and redirecting inquires, and maintaining files and records.
9. Assists in maintaining efficient laboratory operations through effective use of instructional supplies, materials, equipment, and allocated resources.
10. Supports the department chair by maintaining instructional supply inventories within given operational budget limits.
11. Assists with monitoring, training, scheduling and providing work direction to short-term employees and/or college assistants, as directed by the department chair and/or division dean.
12. Maintains inventory of welding performance testing materials. Assists with welder qualification testing; prepares weld test specimens for inspection by the test site administrator and/or supervisor.
13. Prepares and maintains departmental inventories by conducting scheduled audits of both instructional and non-instructional supplies.
14. Assists students in the proper use of all welding and thermal cutting equipment, welding materials, and related safety equipment. Assists faculty with welding demonstrations and demonstrates the proper operation of welding and thermal cutting equipment under faculty direction.
15. Assists faculty in the organization of daily lab teaching demonstrations.
16. Assists with periodic maintenance of welding department tools, equipment, and the Welding Technology Roadshow trailer.
17. Operates forklifts and other material-handling equipment as required.

Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities: Position requires knowledge of:

• Basic principles, procedures, processes, and techniques used in operating common welding/cutting equipment.
• Methods, materials, and equipment used in metal fabrication and thermal cutting.
• Equipment and materials commonly used in welding training facilities.
• Fundamentals of welding history and theory.
• Preventive maintenance procedures for welding tools and equipment.
• Industry health and safety practices and precautions applicable to CTE laboratories.
• Common procedures and techniques used in the processing of metal sheet, plate, bar, and pipe.
• Basic understanding and skills of welding processes such as SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW.
• Safe handling and storage of hazardous materials and compressed gases.
• Applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and environmental compliance requirements.
• Inventory control and purchasing procedures.
• Microsoft Office Suite applications Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. Use of Web browser and website management tools.

Position requires ability to:

• Follow complex instructions to prepare and set up instructional welding laboratories.
• Safely move instructional supplies, consumables, equipment, and furniture using district forklift.
• Perform regular periodic maintenance of common welding, metal working and manufacturing equipment as per manufacturers' recommendation.
• Perform tasks completely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate current knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite, and other advanced technologies used to provide high-quality services.
• Use initiative and problem-solving skills in addressing basic to complex challenges.
• Develop or modify laboratory procedures in cooperation with faculty and staff.
• Keep detailed, accurate records and handle correspondences effectively.
• Organize and prioritize work in anticipation of needs and deadlines with efficiency, speed, and accuracy.
• Work and communicate effectively and cooperatively in oral and written form with students, staff, and faculty.
• Work varied hours including evenings and weekends.
• Support CTE programs at the Advanced Technical Center, Valencia campus, Castaic High School, and Pitchess Detention Center as necessary.
• Demonstrate teamwork and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy and professionalism.
• Understand and work within set curriculum, goals, and objectives of the welding department.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the social, economic, and diversity of community college students, faculty, and administrators.
• Safely tow cargo trailers.
