ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST - FATHERS FIRST

Position begins at 30 hours per week, may increase to 40 hours. One Saturday shift per month in place of a Friday. Position Purpose Under the supervision of the Supervising Director, the Engagement Specialist supports the Fathers First Program by strengthening the involvement of African American fathers and partners. The role coordinates curriculum and support groups for fathers‑to‑be and fathers with young children under one year, and assists in the larger San Diego County PEI and BIH programs. Essential Duties Co‑facilitate fatherhood curriculum for African American fathers and expectant fathers. Provide case management – intake, assessment, referrals, and community service coordination. Coordinate and facilitate weekly fatherhood engagement meetings. Maintain documentation and charts of client services, ensuring compliance with policies. Provide crisis intervention and conflict resolution facilitation. Offer health education on pregnancy, childbirth, men's health, child health, and family health; make referrals. Teach and coach fathers on infant and child development, family dynamics, and co‑parenting. Recruit, develop outreach plans, and engage participants for retention. Provide career development and job training coaching. Link fathers to counseling and support services. Advocate for fathers based on assessments. Create and lead the Fatherhood Subcommittee of the BIH‑PEI CAB. Attend state and local meetings, conferences, trainings as needed. Prepare reports, minutes, memos, agendas, and correspondence; meet CDOH MCAH and county reporting requirements. Other duties as assigned. Desired Minimum Qualifications Demonstrated ability to apply research‑based health education and promotion strategies with African American fathers. Knowledge of infant and child development, social‑emotional learning, attachment theory. Experience working with African American men/fathers in health, social service, religious, or clinical settings. In-depth knowledge of family dynamics, co‑parenting, crisis intervention, community resources, and trauma‑informed practices. Experience facilitating groups, outreach and recruitment, documentation, reporting, and partner collaboration. Language Skills Effective communication in English; bilingual preferred. Bilingual candidates must pass a competency test. Mathematical Skills Proficient in basic arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions and manage variable solutions. Experience and Training Associate’s degree in social work, human services, public health, psychology, counseling, child development, sociology or related field. Bachelor’s preferred. Minimum 1 year of case management or related services to diverse populations, preferably with fathers and underserved communities. Licenses, Certificates & Special Requirements Valid California driver’s license and current automobile insurance. CPR/First Aid certification. Negative TB test required prior to employment. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. May require transportation of clients in personal vehicle. Physical and Mental Demands Regular tasks include walking, standing, sitting, speaking, hearing, using hands, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Vision requirements: close vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus. Mental demands: effective verbal and written communication, interpretation, problem‑solving, organization, learning new procedures, multitasking. Work Environment Typical office conditions with quiet noise level. Reasonable accommodations will be made as needed.
