Voice of University Athletics

San Francisco University High School (UHS) is looking for the next Voice of University Athletics.

We are seeking an energetic, professional, and engaging Public Address Announcer who can help bring our home athletic events to life. This role is about more than reading names and announcing the score. Our PA Announcer is an important part of the game-day experience and helps set the tone for our student-athletes, families, fans, and visiting teams.

The ideal candidate understands how to bring energy to a gym without making the event about themselves. They know when to build excitement, when to let the moment speak for itself, and how to create an atmosphere that is professional, welcoming, and uniquely University.

Founded in 1975, San Francisco University High School is a coeducational independent day school serving approximately 540 students in grades 9-12. Located in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood, UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.

University Athletics sponsors 23 varsity teams, with many programs also competing at the junior varsity and Frosh/Soph levels. Our goal is to provide student-athletes and our community with a first-class interscholastic athletics experience.

The Public Address Announcer will serve as the primary in-venue voice for select University Athletics home competitions and special events.

The majority of assignments will include basketball and volleyball, with additional opportunities to announce postseason or special events in soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, and other sports.

The PA Announcer may also support signature University Athletics events, including Chase Day, Oracle Day, Senior Nights, Big Red Fridays, championship events, rivalry games, and other special celebrations.

This is a game-day position for someone who loves sports, understands the importance of atmosphere, and takes pride in creating a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.

Key responsibilities include:

• Serve as the public address voice for assigned University Athletics home competitions and special events.
• Deliver clear, accurate, enthusiastic, and professional in-game announcements.
• Introduce teams, starting lineups, coaches, officials, and special guests.
• Recognize milestones, Senior Night participants, championship teams, and other special moments.
• Develop and prepare game scripts, announcements, and promotional reads in collaboration with the Athletics Department.
• Assist with game-day music planning and the overall flow of the in-venue experience.
• Work closely with Athletics staff, coaches, game management personnel, and event staff.
• Help create an energetic environment while maintaining appropriate neutrality, professionalism, and sportsmanship.
• Ensure names, pronunciations, team information, and event details are prepared and communicated accurately.
• Follow all UHS, Bay Area Conference, North Coast Section, and CIF policies and expectations.
• Represent University High School and University Athletics with professionalism, care, and integrity.

• Read the room and adjust their energy to the moment.
• Be comfortable speaking in front of large crowds.
• Be organized, prepared, dependable, and punctual.
• Pronounce names accurately and take pride in getting the details right.
• Understand that high school athletics should be competitive, exciting, and centered on students.
• Work respectfully with students, coaches, officials, families, and visiting schools from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
• Be comfortable receiving feedback and collaborating as part of a game-day team.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• College coursework or a degree in communications, broadcasting, journalism, sports media, or a related field is preferred but not required.
• Previous public address, broadcasting, emcee, radio, podcasting, or live-event experience preferred.
• Knowledge of basketball and volleyball is strongly preferred.
• Availability for afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend competitions throughout the school year.
• Reliable transportation and the ability to arrive well in advance of assigned events.

All finalists will be asked to submit an audition clip demonstrating clarity, energy, pronunciation, and overall announcing style.

We take the game-day experience seriously. Our goal is to create an environment that feels special when student-athletes walk into the gym, step onto the field, or compete in front of their school community. The Public Address Announcer plays an important role in creating that atmosphere.

Compensation: This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $50 per hour. Scheduling is based on the University Athletics home competition and special event calendar.
