Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) to join the MedSurg 3CC team at a Level II Trauma facility . This 30-bed unit provides care for a diverse surgical and medical patient population, with a strong emphasis on postoperative recovery and complex surgical care.

The unit offers a close-knit team environment where communication, collaboration, flexibility, and quality patient care are highly valued.

Patient Population

Common diagnoses, procedures, and patient populations include:

• Total joint replacement
• Spinal surgery
• Urology procedures
• Abdominal surgery, including laparoscopic appendectomy and bowel resection
• Bariatric patients
• Medical overflow
• Colostomies
• Patients with Hemovac and JP drains

Note: GYN patients are cared for on the maternity unit, while cardiac MS/Telemetry patients are assigned to the appropriate cardiac unit.

Staffing & Patient Ratios

RN-to-Patient Ratios:

• Days: 1:4–5
• Nights: 1:5–6

Support Staff:

• Nurse Aides/PCTs available
• Approximately 1 PCT per 12 patients

A Charge Nurse is present on both day and night shifts. The night Charge Nurse may occasionally take a low-acuity patient assignment.

Required Certification

• BLS – Required

Preferred Experience & Skills

• Surgical nursing experience preferred
• Postoperative experience preferred
• Early ambulation experience preferred
• Strong MedSurg assessment and clinical skills
• First-time travelers are welcome

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive medical-surgical and postoperative nursing care.
• Monitor patients and recognize changes in clinical condition.
• Administer medications and treatments according to orders.
• Care for surgical drains, including Hemovac and JP drains.
• Provide care for patients with colostomies.
• Support postoperative mobility and early ambulation.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team.
• Maintain accurate patient documentation in Epic .

Drips & Therapies

• RNs are not required to titrate drips .
• Occasional therapies may include:
  • Heparin drip
  • PCA pump
  • TPN

Respiratory Care

• Oxygen support may include nasal cannula .
• Respiratory Therapy performs respiratory treatments.

Telemetry

• Remote telemetry packs are utilized.
• Monitor Techs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry.
• RNs are not required to independently read telemetry strips.

Schedule

• Day Shift: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
• Night Shift: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
• Manager creates the schedule.
• For rotating day/night schedules, a 7–7 rotation will not occur more than once per week.
• Block scheduling may be considered based on unit staffing needs.
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday coverage required as needed.

Floating Requirements

Travelers may float to:

• Medical-Surgical
• Telemetry

When floating to Telemetry, support is available for telemetry strip interpretation, while the RN will care for assigned medical patients.

Unit Expectations

• Bedside shift report is expected.
• Strong communication and teamwork are important.
• The unit maintains a close-knit and collaborative culture.

Traveler Requirements

• 50-mile radius rule applies.
• Candidates must be outside the 50-mile radius to qualify.
• Candidates may not currently work full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity.
• RTO must be submitted upfront.
• Up to 7 days of RTO per 13-week contract may be considered.
• Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.
