Cashier

Responsible for working a shift both accurately and efficiently, within company policy, to ensure that the shift contributes to increased profitability of the store. Receive and disburse money in establishments other than financial institutions. Usually involves use of electronic scanners, cash registers, or related equipment. Often involved in processing credit or debit card transactions and validating checks.

Essential functions include receiving payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic debits; issuing receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers; counting money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change; greeting customers entering store; maintaining clean and orderly checkout areas; establishing or identifying prices of goods, services or admission, and tabulating bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners; issuing trading stamps, and redeeming food stamps and coupons; resolving customer complaints; answering customers' questions and providing information on procedures or policies; cashing checks for customers; weighing items sold by weight to determine prices; calculating total payments received during a time period and reconciling this with total sales; computing and recording totals of transactions; selling tickets and other items to customers; bagging, boxing, wrapping, or gift-wrapping merchandise, and preparing packages for shipment; processing merchandise returns and exchanges; requesting information or assistance using paging systems; stocking shelves, and marking prices on shelves and items; compiling and maintaining non-monetary reports and records; monitoring checkout stations to ensure that they have adequate cash available and that they are staffed appropriately; offering customers carry-out service at the completion of transactions; observing schedule shift hours as assigned by store manager and/or assistant manager; abiding by all city, county, state, and federal regulations; giving all customers prompt and courteous service; performing specific tasks as assigned by store manager and/or assistant manager; notifying store manager and/or assistant manager of all cash discrepancies; operating shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profit; properly recording all shift hours worked on the time clock. Verify and sign the time ticket report; recording all sales at time of purchase; accurately recording all markups, markdowns, spoilage, and store use of merchandise according to company procedures; preparing shift-checkout report at the end of shift according to company procedures; advising store manager and/or assistant manager of any personnel situations or policy violations having a negative effect on store operations; advising any other store cashier with problems concerning store operations to take with store manager and/or assistant manager; following company policy by maintaining a low cash drawer and utilizing the safe, as instructed by store and/or assistant manager; completing shift-checkout report at appropriate times as instructed by store manager and/or assistant manager; following correct vendor check-in procedures, within company guidelines and as instructed by store manager and/or assistant manager; performing a variety of cleaning duties such as cleaning front windows, around check stands, clean out carts, sweep floors, dust shelves and lift and carry trash to outside containers; cleaning parking lot and grounds surrounding the store; other job-related tasks as required.

Position qualifications include accountability, adaptability, autonomy, communication, oral, creative, customer oriented, detail oriented, energetic, enthusiastic, friendly, motivation, organized, patience, presentation skills, reliability, self-motivated, time management, and working under pressure. Education required is a high school graduate or general education degree (GED). No prior experience needed. Skills and abilities include computer skills and basic skills. Other requirements include having access to a phone at all times, able to read and understand operating instructions for equipment in the store such as electronic cash register, able to operate a cash register for up to 8 hours or longer, able to lift 25 pounds at least once during shift and have good oral communication skills. Must be able to perform basic math calculations in order to make change, complete shift reports and account for a variety of products during vendor check in.

Physical demands include lifting/carrying, standing, walking, sitting, handling/fingering, reaching outward, reaching above shoulder, pushing/pulling.

Work environment is grocery.
