Job Description

This role leads and participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures on construction and retrofit projects. The technician plans and lays out plumbing work, directs helpers and junior mechanics, and ensures all work complies with applicable specifications and building codes. Assignments include new construction, additions, retrofits, and pharmaceutical-related projects, with tasks received through construction management software, written job requests, and emergency calls. Work is performed with a high degree of independence under general direction from on-site leads, and is evaluated through inspections, user feedback, and compliance reviews.

Responsibilities

• Plan, lay out, and execute plumbing installations for construction, retrofit, addition, and pharmaceutical projects, typically in buildings of five stories or fewer.
• Direct, guide, and supervise helpers, plumbing mechanics, and junior mechanics on job sites and in the shop to ensure safe and efficient completion of plumbing tasks.
• Install plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures using appropriate methods, materials, tools, and equipment in accordance with specifications and building codes.
• Interpret and work from blueprints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and existing or broken parts to determine accurate layouts and installation requirements.
• Lay out and mark locations for storm and sanitary lines, water lines, and temporary water lines, ensuring proper routing, slopes, and connections.
• Perform installation and repair of piping systems using materials such as cast iron and PVC, ensuring correct assembly, support, and alignment.
• Analyze defects and malfunctions in plumbing equipment and systems to determine necessary repairs and corrective actions.
• Use hand tools and construction tools safely and effectively to install, adjust, and repair plumbing components.
• Coordinate with on-site leads and project teams to receive and complete work assignments provided via construction software, written requests, and emergency calls.
• Ensure that all plumbing work meets project specifications, applicable codes, and quality standards, and address any issues identified during inspections or user feedback.
• Participate in construction, remodeling, and maintenance activities, including retrofits and additions, while adapting to changing project requirements.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in both the shop and job sites, and handle tools and materials responsibly.
• Communicate progress, issues, and needs to supervisors and team members during projects and upon completion.
• Support temporary water line setup and other provisional plumbing arrangements needed during construction phases.

Essential Skills

• Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the plumbing trade.
• Ability to analyze defects in plumbing equipment and systems and determine necessary repairs.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to lay out work from prints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and broken parts.
• Demonstrated experience installing plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures in construction environments.
• Proficiency working with plumbing materials such as cast iron and PVC.
• Ability to lay out and mark storm and sanitary lines, water lines, and temporary water lines accurately.
• Capability to lead or run a small crew of helpers or junior mechanics on storm or sanitary line installations.
• Skilled use of hand tools and construction tools related to plumbing installation and repair.
• Strong understanding of plumbing codes and standards applicable to construction and remodeling work.
• Ability to work independently with general direction while maintaining high quality and safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Cast iron plumbing experience is a significant plus.
• Experience working on retrofit, addition, pharmaceutical, and new construction projects.
• Experience using construction or project management software to receive and track work assignments.
• Previous experience running or assisting a plumbing crew on multi-story projects (typically five stories or fewer).
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in layout and installation.
• Effective communication skills for coordinating with leads, team members, and other trades.
• Ability to adapt to various job site conditions and changing project requirements.

Work Environment

You will work on active construction sites and in a shop environment, using hand tools and standard plumbing equipment to install and maintain systems. Assignments are received through construction management software, written job requests, and emergency calls, and work is performed under general direction from on-site leads. The environment is fast-paced and field-oriented, with a focus on teamwork, safe work practices, and adherence to building codes and project specifications.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hampton, NJ.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $37.00/hr.
