Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

Our client, a manufacturing company, is seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist for a contract engagement at its New London facility. This role supports the site's compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations while the company completes a facility expansion project.
The position works closely with plant operations, quality, and engineering teams to identify hazards, maintain regulatory documentation, and support inspections. The contract is expected to run through the duration of the expansion project, with potential for extension based on business needs.
This is an on-site role requiring regular presence on the manufacturing floor. Candidates should be comfortable working in an industrial environment and coordinating with multiple departments to drive compliance initiatives forward.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine safety audits and inspections across production areas
- Maintain compliance documentation for OSHA, EPA, and state environmental agencies
- Investigate workplace incidents and near-misses and recommend corrective actions
- Develop and deliver safety training for plant employees and contractors
- Track and report on environmental permits and waste management programs
- Support development of emergency response and evacuation procedures
- Coordinate with operations leadership on hazard mitigation projects
- Prepare regulatory filings and respond to agency inquiries
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an EHS role within a manufacturing environment
- Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and Connecticut DEEP regulations
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS management software
- Ability to work on-site full-time for the duration of the contract
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential preferred
