The Childcare Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, supervision, and daily operation of the childcare center. The Director provides leadership to teachers and staff while ensuring that children receive a safe, nurturing, educational, and developmentally appropriate environment. The Director is responsible for maintaining high standards of care, professionalism, ethics, and customer service while ensuring the center operates in accordance with state licensing requirements, health and safety regulations, and 1st Start Child Development Center policies and procedures.

The Director will oversee the planning and implementation of programs and activities that support the physical, social, emotional, and educational development of children. The Director will provide guidance, support, and accountability to staff while promoting teamwork, communication, professionalism, and a positive work environment.

A high standard of ethical and moral conduct is expected. Parents and guardians trust our staff and administration to provide first-class service and care. The Director must demonstrate honesty, reliability, confidentiality, strong leadership, sound judgment, and a commitment to the well-being and safety of every child.

The Director will create, manage, and participate in a variety of learning and operational environments that provide children with opportunities to develop to their fullest potential. The Director will work collaboratively and professionally with teachers, staff, parents, guardians, administration, and community partners to promote the overall success and well-being of the center.

Childcare Director Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall leadership, management, and supervision of the childcare center and its daily operations.
  • Ensure the safety, supervision, health, and well-being of all children while they are in the care of the center.
  • Supervise, support, train, coach, and evaluate teachers and childcare staff.
  • Ensure classrooms are properly staffed and maintained in accordance with state licensing requirements and center policies.
  • Monitor classroom operations to ensure appropriate supervision, room control, cleanliness, organization, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Ensure staff members follow all center policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and licensing regulations.
  • Maintain familiarity with and ensure compliance with applicable state childcare licensing rules and 1st Start Child Development Center operational policies.
  • Conduct regular observations of classrooms, playgrounds, bathrooms, common areas, and other areas of the facility to ensure proper supervision and safety.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, accidents, injuries, conflicts, behavioral concerns, and other situations involving children or staff.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records relating to children, staff, attendance, incidents, enrollment, health requirements, training, and licensing documentation.
  • Communicate professionally and consistently with parents and guardians regarding their children’s care, development, behavior, attendance, concerns, and overall experience at the center.
  • Address parent concerns, complaints, and questions in a professional, respectful, and timely manner.
  • Support teachers in developing and implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans, activities, and learning experiences.
  • Ensure the center provides a positive learning environment that supports children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
  • Monitor staff performance and address performance concerns through appropriate coaching, corrective action, and follow-up.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and retention of qualified childcare staff as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate staff schedules and ensure adequate classroom coverage at all times.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate staff meetings, in-house training, professional development, and other required meetings.
  • Ensure staff maintain required credentials, certifications, training, background checks, and licensing documentation.
  • Promote positive communication, teamwork, accountability, and professionalism among all staff members.
  • Ensure classrooms, bathrooms, playgrounds, kitchen areas, offices, and common areas are clean, safe, sanitary, and properly maintained.
  • Monitor center supplies, classroom materials, food service, equipment, and inventory to ensure proper use, organization, and availability.
  • Assist with budgeting, purchasing, enrollment, billing, tuition collection, and other administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Protect the confidentiality and privacy of children, families, and employees at all times.
  • Ensure all staff maintain professional boundaries and appropriate conduct with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Monitor staff and classroom practices to ensure children are treated with respect, patience, dignity, and positive discipline.
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed regarding medication, allergies, meals, diapering/toileting, sanitation, emergency preparedness, and child release.
  • Prepare the center for inspections, monitoring visits, licensing reviews, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain required licensing documentation and ensure corrective actions are completed when necessary.
  • Assist the owner/administrator with center policies, procedures, goals, and operational improvements.
  • Represent the childcare center professionally when communicating with families, licensing representatives, community organizations, vendors, and other professionals.
  • Assist the Director/Owner or administration whenever necessary to ensure the successful operation of the center.
  • Address staffing, classroom, operational, and parent concerns promptly and appropriately.
  • Maintain professional room and center control at all times.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining a professional, respectful, safe, and positive environment throughout the center.
  • Speak professionally and respectfully at all times.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, organization, decision-making, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Be willing and able to assist in classrooms and with children when staffing or operational needs require it.
  • Be able to observe, hear, respond to, and appropriately address children’s needs and emergencies throughout the center.
  • Be able to lift up to 30 pounds and perform physical duties necessary to support children and center operations when required.
  • Be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and move throughout the facility for extended periods of time.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, professional development, center events, parent meetings, and other functions as requested.
  • Adhere to all 1st Start Child Development Center health, safety, personnel, and operational procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required by the Owner/Administrator.
