Job Title: Commercial Plumber Mechanic / Lead Plumber / Medical Gas Plumber Job Description

This role focuses on commercial plumbing installation for a new medical center, including piping systems, medical gas work, and leading small crews on construction projects. You will install and maintain a variety of plumbing systems, work with different piping materials, interpret blueprints, and ensure high-quality workmanship and safety on site.

• Install, maintain, and repair a wide variety of commercial plumbing systems and equipment in a new medical center environment.
• Run and press copper, PVC, and cast iron pipe in new construction settings.
• Read and interpret blueprint drawings to plan and execute plumbing installations accurately (Journeyman level and above).
• Lead and oversee small crews, including mechanics and helpers, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification (Lead level).
• Work effectively with a helper, providing direction, guidance, and support as needed.
• Perform laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing and associated mechanical systems.
• Transport tools, materials, equipment, and supplies to the work site by hand, truck, or motorized truck.
• Use hand tools and other equipment safely and effectively for cutting, fitting, soldering, and installing piping systems.
• Carry out tasks involving copper splicing, cast iron work, and soldering as required by project specifications.
• Support installation of medical gas piping systems in accordance with applicable standards and certifications (for medical gas plumbers).
• Maintain clean and organized work areas, removing debris and ensuring a safe working environment.
• Follow all site safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and adherence to construction safety standards.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling as needed.
• Lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds in the course of daily work.

• Minimum 3+ years of experience as a commercial plumber mechanic.
• For Lead Plumber roles, at least 5+ years of experience and proven ability to lead small crews.
• Ability to run and press copper, PVC, and cast iron pipe in commercial construction.
• Proficiency in working with cast iron and copper piping and performing soldering tasks.
• Experience in new construction plumbing, including installation and layout of piping systems.
• Journeyman or Master Plumbers license preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings (Journeyman level and above).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and direct a helper on site.
• Capability to run a crew of 14 people is a strong plus, especially for lead positions.
• For medical gas plumbers, possession of MediTrac certification or Medical Gas Certification.
• Comfort working with hand tools and mechanical tools used in plumbing and construction.
• Physical ability to climb, reach above shoulder height, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

• Background in commercial construction environments, particularly healthcare or medical facilities.
• Experience with general labor tasks on construction sites, including material handling and site cleanup.
• Exposure to electrical, HVAC, and mechanical systems in a commercial setting is beneficial.
• Familiarity with piping installation techniques, including copper splicing, fitting, and cast iron installation.
• Comfort working 10-hour shifts and occasional Saturdays to meet project timelines.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate work with other trades and team members.
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship and safety.
• Willingness to participate in ongoing training and apprenticeship programs to advance skills and credentials.

You will work on a new medical center project in Lynchburg, performing commercial plumbing installations in an active construction environment. The schedule typically consists of 10-hour shifts Monday through Friday, with some Saturday work as needed to meet project deadlines. A per diem of $100 is provided for each day worked. The work involves frequent physical activity, including climbing, reaching, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 50 lbs, in a setting where you will use hand tools, mechanical tools, and standard construction equipment. Work clothing and personal protective equipment are provided on site, and adherence to safety protocols and proper attire is expected at all times.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lynchburg, VA.

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
