Physician Assistant - Orthopedic

Job Summary The WPPA Physician Assistant is responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision including conducting examinations and writing prescriptions. Within the physician‑physician assistant relationship, the Physician Assistant exercises autonomy in medical decision making across a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The role may also include responsibilities for education, research, and administrative services. Essential Functions Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. First Assist on surgical procedures; first and second assist on total hips and knees. Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, treats illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds, consults with physicians as needed and refers more complicated cases to physicians. Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care. Triages patient calls, evaluates patient problems, and responds to emergencies—including the use of CPR. Counsels patients/families on preventative health care. Documents patient information and care in the medical record confidentially, and may maintain a departmental statistical database for research purposes. Demonstrates knowledge of the medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants; familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis. Demonstrates skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data. Demonstrates skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral. Demonstrates ability to make responsible decisions within the scope of PA practice. Demonstrates ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases. Demonstrates ability to educate patients, families, and staff in a user‑friendly manner. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor Degree Required MS Preferred One year experience as Physician Assistant in an appropriate clinical setting Preferred Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant Collaborative Practice Agreement Demonstrates ability to act in a professional capacity and serve as a professional role model Demonstrates leadership skills including collaboration and negotiation Demonstrates strong, written and verbal communication skills Establishes two‑way communication by utilizing a variety of methods, actively listening, and responding appropriately Ability to concentrate on fine details with constant interruptions Performs multiple duties in a high‑volume area Ability to deal professionally and efficiently with all levels of management and external constituencies Self‑starter, self‑motivated, and able to work without supervision Flexible, organized, and able to set priorities Demonstrates teamwork and adaptability Maintains composure under stress Ability to give clear, decisive instructions to nurses and technicians Ability to maintain legible and thorough documentation of patient care Ability for acute visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory senses Ability to perform computer work for extensive periods of time Credentials and Licensure Physician Assistant – New York State Board of Medicine Upon hire required: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association) EEO Statement White Plains Hospital Medical Center is an equal employment opportunity employer.
