Neonatology Advanced Practice Provider
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago is a dynamic and stimulating place to work. The NICU in Comer Children's Hospital is one of the largest Level III NICUs in Chicago and a major referral center for the sickest newborn infants with the most complex conditions throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana. It has close to 850 admissions per year accounting for over 21,000 patient bed-days. In collaboration with the Maternal-Fetal Service, Neonatology runs the University of Chicago Perinatal Network with over 10 affiliated community hospitals. A state-of-the-art facility, the NICU offers critically-ill infants with innovative mode of interventions. Our Small Baby Unit, the first in the state, serves the most premature infants less than or equal to 28 weeks and offers the specialized care they require.
Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.
- Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider.
- Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
- Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed.
- Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed.
- Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice.
- Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
- Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
- Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
- Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures.
- Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
- Participate in providing in-service and outreach education program.
- Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit.
- May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
- Serve as preceptor to APP students.
- Evaluates goals and outcomes considering the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
- Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
- Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.
Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
Certifications: Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
- Completion of approved NNP training.
Experience:
- 2 years of clinical experience in level III or level IV NICU as a NICU nurse or NICU APP.
Licenses and Certifications for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner:
- NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
- Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date.
- Current registered nurse license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
- Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.
Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
- Current Physician Assistant license/registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
- Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
- Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.
Preferred Competencies:
- Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement.
- Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
- Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional, respectful, and compassionate manner.
- Proficiency in EPIC.
- Proficiency in use of computers.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.
- Ability to properly document and bill for services provided.
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to use independent judgment.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to interview and obtain medical information.
- Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with collaboration physician upon hire.

- May require participation in on-call or after-hours coverage depending on clinical service needs.

- May staff other sites as required by neonatology coverage agreements the section has in place.
