Staff Attorney - Immigrants’ Rights

Public Counsel is a nonprofit public interest law firm that champions civil and economic justice. The Immigrants’ Rights team serves as a leading advocate for detained and non‑citizen immigrants, including survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. JOB SUMMARY Reporting to the Supervising Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides direct legal representation to immigrant survivors, recruits and supervises pro bono attorneys, engages in community education, collaborates with program staff, manages case data, and performs administrative support. RESPONSIBILITIES Provide direct, client‑centered representation on affirmative applications (U visa, T visa, VAWA, adjustment of status). Recruit, train, and supervise pro bono attorneys in U visa, VAWA, T visa, and adjustment of status matters. Conduct community education and coalition outreach to promote rights of immigrant survivors. Collaborate closely with Supervising Attorney, Program Manager, and interdisciplinary team members. Collect case data and contribute to grant reports. Perform general administrative duties—opening/closing matters, document management, filing, and related tasks. QUALIFICATIONS 2–8 years of legal advocacy experience. Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing of a state bar (California bar preferred). Fluency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking) strongly preferred. Experience with survivor‑based affirmative applications (U, T, VAWA) or work with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking preferred. Strong legal research, writing, and attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and manage a large caseload independently. Comfort working with clients from diverse racial, socioeconomic, and trauma backgrounds. Understanding of trauma and its effects on clients and advocates. Strategic, creative, and effective problem‑solving skills. Excellent communication and collaborative teamwork. Openness to feedback and commitment to continuous learning. Commitment to immigrants’ rights and Public Counsel’s mission of economic and racial justice. High emotional intelligence, maturity, cultural competency, and bias awareness. JOB TYPE AND BENEFITS Full‑time, exempt; salary range $78,000–$93,500 annually based on experience. Fixed‑duration position funded until September30,2027; continued employment contingent on additional funding. Exempt employees must work a minimum of 37.5 hours per week and accommodate client needs as required. Medical, dental, and vision coverage with employer‑pay options. Flexible Spending Account and employer‑paid life and disability insurance. Paid time off: 15 vacation days (up to 20 after 3 years), 12 sick days, 2 personal observance days, 11 paid holidays, and two one‑week office closures. Compensatory time up to 60 hours per year for exempt staff. 403(b) retirement plan with elective employee contributions and discretionary employer contributions after one year. Free on‑site parking or public transportation reimbursement of $45 per pay period. Up to six months of parental leave. Professional development support, including annual dues for required licenses and membership in professional organizations. Central headquarters in Koreatown with easy public transportation access.
