Day Porter / Custodian

Location: 434 W Lerdo Rd, Tucson
Compensation: $15.50 - $18.00/hour (DOE)
Start Date: ASAP
Schedule: Full-Time, On-Site

Position Overview

Academies of Math and Science (AMS) is a network of high-performing public charter schools dedicated to academic excellence and providing safe, supportive learning environments for students in historically underserved communities.

AMS is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Day Porter / Custodian to support the daily operations of our campus. This role is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Maintenance

• Monitor and maintain cleanliness throughout the campus during the school day.
• Clean and sanitize classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors and other surfaces.
• Collect and dispose of trash and recycling from indoor and outdoor areas.
• Clean windows, walls, fixtures, and high-touch surfaces.
• Launder custodial materials such as towels and mop heads.

Daily Operations Support

• Maintain adequate inventories of cleaning supplies and equipment.
• Assist with cafeteria setup, school events, and operational needs as assigned.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks, including light bulb replacement and basic facility upkeep.
• Operate and maintain custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, and carpet extractors.
• Apply floor waxes, finishes, and sealants as directed.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements and chemical handling procedures.
• Maintain compliance with campus safety standards and HAZMAT regulations.
• Assist with securing campus facilities, including locking and unlocking designated areas.
• Promptly address safety concerns and report facility issues.

Communication & Collaboration

• Communicate custodial supply needs and maintenance concerns to campus leadership.
• Interact professionally with students, families, staff, and visitors.
• Respond promptly to facility requests and operational needs.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support school operations.

Qualifications & Competencies
Required

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum of two (2) years of custodial, facilities, maintenance, or related experience.
• Knowledge of custodial procedures, cleaning equipment, and safe chemical handling practices.
• Ability to operate custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor buffers, and carpet extractors.
• Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an Arizona IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Preferred

• Experience working in a school, educational, or public facility setting.
• Experience supporting large facilities or high-traffic environments.
