Details Medical unit with 36-48 beds, including flex semi-private rooms Mixed patient population of Med/Surg (90%) and Intermediate Care (10%) patients, with occasional CVA overflow Common diagnoses include DKA, pre/post-surgical care, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal and hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, and DVTs Administers oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions Manages peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices Performs telemetry monitoring, cardiac strip interpretation, and preventative/restorative wound care Patient ratios vary by pod: 1:5-6 for long length of stay Med/Surg, 1:5 for Med/Surg-Telemetry, and 1:4 for Intermediate Care 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week schedule with weekend rotations of up to 4 out of 6 weekends (Fri-Sun) Every Other Weekend (WOW) scheduling may be discussed based on availability No mandatory on-call requirements, though optional extra on-call shifts may be available Floating required to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation Uses Epic EMR (required), along with Omnicell and Alaris equipment CNA support at a 1:8 ratio, dedicated charge nurse without patient load, phlebotomy and IV/VAT team support, and 24/7 RT and Hospitalist coverage Requirements Active RN license (South Dakota Standard or Compact) required Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required Completion of an accredited nursing education program required Comfort with MedSurg patient assignments required Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations preferred Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips Experience with wound care, line management, and drain/tube management required Comfort with titration of drips including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and occasionally Esmolol or other antihypertensives Epic EMR experience required, especially for first-time travelers First-time travelers must have more than 1 year of experience and prior Epic experience Additional Information Provides direct patient care across long length of stay, Med/Surg-Telemetry, and Intermediate Care pods May be asked to precept nursing students Subject to monthly audits for pre/post pain scoring with a 90% compliance requirement Two days of unit orientation including policies, protocols, and online learning, plus two precepted shifts on the unit Scrub color required: Navy Blue Free parking available on-site Holiday RTO requests are currently not being accepted; time off around winter holidays must be approved by the manager Time off up to a week and a half may be approved; full week requests must be extended Blackout dates for time off during the first 2-3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible; no local travelers accepted Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler First-time travelers welcome if they meet the experience and Epic requirements American Traveler Job ID P-747479.
