Correctional Sergeant

Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Correctional Lieutenant, the Correctional Sergeant supervises Correctional Officers and oversees the safe custody, security, discipline, and welfare of the incarcerated population. The Sergeant monitors and evaluates staff performance, provides training and guidance, and ensures compliance with departmental policies, procedures, post orders, and safety requirements.

The Sergeant also reviews reports and incident documentation for accuracy and completeness, conducts administrative disciplinary hearings, assists with inmate appeals, and maintains order and discipline within assigned areas. Additional responsibilities include ensuring proper sanitation and safety conditions, responding appropriately to accidents and emergencies, completing required documentation, attending supervisory meetings, and performing other duties as assigned.

Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
