COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

The Computer Support Specialist is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing of College owned computers and software and advanced video/data projection systems used in support of academic programs across the College campus. The Computer Support Specialist assists in the integration of traditional audiovisual systems with new instructional technologies to ensure the College keeps pace with the changing needs of higher educational instructional environments. The Computer Support Specialist assists in providing technical assistance to faculty and staff regarding computer and software systems through troubleshooting problems with desktop computers, maintaining and repairing information systems equipment, and performing installation of software and hardware for the College. Responsibilities Supports academic programs and College activities by installing computer systems and related equipment in classrooms, labs and offices. Ensures accurate records are kept by maintaining and documenting microcomputer and network components, including hardware, peripherals, and software. Assures the College's hardware and software requirements are met with the highest level of performance and reliability byassisting with installation, configuration, recommendations, wiring, wireless, and support. Maintains and configures computer operating systems and management software. Implements new computing resources as required, including hardware, software, and peripherals. Maintains the "thin OS" devices and appliances that support the virtual desktop infrastructure. Configures and manages desktop images for deployment to lab and end user computers. Installation, and maintenance on printers not included in the College's copier/printer contract. Maintains a professional and positive rapport with students, faculty, and staff by assisting with backing up data and e-mail login problems. Helps to ensure the availability of computer resources by monitoring information systems use and providing support services for various technologies. Assists with the preventative maintenance program for all information systems equipment. Maintains the operational condition of advanced electronics and video/data systems through cleaning, calibrating, modifying, and repairing technology systems campus-wide. Assists with the receiving and handling of new and in-service equipment and works with IS personnel to formulate and update operating instructions and training materials for the proper use of equipment. Maintains classroom instructional technology by assisting in the development and implementation of a preventive maintenance schedule, performing periodic servicing as directed in technical manuals, maintaining a technical database for equipment, controlling a spare parts inventory to ensure the availability of required repair parts and components, and reading technical manuals and attending training opportunities to facilitate proper performance of these systems. Assists with recycling of all e-waste items for the College. Assists in facilitating the installation of advanced media systems and serves as a backup for the IT Services Liaison and Help Desk Representative, including evening operations. Ensures a quality program of support services is continuously offered by meeting regularly with the Manager of Desktop Computing to review, assess, and suggest improvements regarding technical support. Participates regularly in meeting discussions affecting campus support such as procurement, implementation, problem determination and resolution, training, and the development of user computing standards. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contact with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by the Chief Information Officer. Ensures the shared workspaces, office space, and storage space utilized by the desktop team is kept organized and tidy to promote an efficient and professional work environment. Assists the other IT teams in troubleshooting issues that affect staff and students. Executes responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the college’s policies, which includes the Code of Ethics. Contributes to the overall success of Information Services by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Associate’s degree in computer science, computer information systems, or related field. Two or more years of experience in computer information systems. Knowledge Knowledge of MCCC’s vision, mission, and values and a commitment to further its educational goals and strategic plans. Knowledge of information technology, computer operations, network, and database processing Knowledge of standard installation and maintenance procedures for computer operations. Knowledge and proficiency of office technology skills including Microsoft products, virtual platforms, and room A/V systems, database software, web browsers, and a willingness to learn and master new technologies as needed. Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and the correct usage of the English language. Skills Skill in diagnosing computer operating problems. Skill in maintaining and updating records and related systems by displaying strong attention to detail, dedication to customer service, and a team approach to work. Skill and proficiency in the use of office equipment and technology, computers and related software, such as word processing and spreadsheets, and the ability to master new technologies. Skill in diplomacy, tact and emotional intelligence required to develop positive relations. Skill in responding to public inquiries and internal requests with a high degree of professionalism. Skill in developing, implementing, and maintaining procedures to enhance efficiency in department operations and coordinate activities across departments. Abilities Ability to interact and assist computer users of varying skill levels. Ability to understand configuration, installation, and computer maintenance guidelines. Ability to acquire knowledge of the principles and practices of a community college and skill in providing support to such activities. Ability to work flexibly and independently, set priorities, work simultaneously on numerous tasks, use good judgement and initiative, and meet/exceed deadlines. Ability to work with minimal direction and comfortable with making decisions. Ability to understand instructions and follow detailed procedures consistently. Ability to work professionally with the public and serve as a representative of the College with discretion. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with staff, students, faculty, the public, and other professional contacts. Demonstrate administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work in a fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions, and meet deadlines. Ability to critically assess situations, maintain attention to detail, solve problems, work efficiently under stress, within deadlines, and changing work priorities. Ability to perform extensive research, compile complex data and prepare accurate records and reports. Ability to type and enter data with speed and accuracy. Ability to set up and maintain complex and confidential files, databases, records and schedules. Ability to establish credibility with broad and diverse constituencies within the college based upon integrity, critical thinking, outstanding operational performance, a customer service orientation and excellent interpersonal relations. Ability to identify and secure confidential information. Ability to use a variety of power and hand tools for the repair and installation of computers and video equipment.
