About the Position

Hours per Shift: 36 guaranteed Experience: One year of professional nursing experience preferred License: Must possess current licensure in the state of employment Certifications: A valid driver's license required Must-Have: Registered Nurse Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting with patient examinations and treatments. The RN applies appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents. Preparation of the examining room and equipment is required. Medication dispensing and documentation must adhere to applicable policies and procedures. The RN will contact Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders as required. Assessment of new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries is part of the responsibilities. Referrals to emergency rooms or other healthcare facilities should be made as necessary. Emergency procedures must be performed as needed, notifying the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is required. Monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases is necessary where appropriate. The RN will supervise and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and external provider agencies is essential. The RN should utilize established corporate and facility policies and procedures while exercising sound independent judgment. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services are required to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services. Confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. The RN assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all services provided are documented. Monitoring of potential catastrophic illnesses is crucial. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as required, must be conducted. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, specifically those covering controlled substances, is necessary. Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior are part of the role. Inspection of the medical unit to prevent potential contraband use must be performed. Health counseling and education on an individual or group basis will be provided as required. Assistance with preparing and maintaining various records, reports, and logs is required. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures will be necessary. The RN will review and respond to lawsuits and may attend court hearings when required. Facilitation of accreditation for the medical program by providing approved medical services is essential. Safety and accident reports must be prepared and disseminated as required. Appropriate actions must be taken in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
