Communications Technician (911 Dispatcher)

What You’ll Do As a Communications Technician (911 Dispatcher), you’ll be the critical link between the public and police, fire, and EMS—helping ensure the right response is sent quickly and accurately. Receive and document emergency and non‑emergency calls, then relay clear, timely information to responders. Dispatch and coordinate police, fire, and EMS resources using radio and 911 systems. Monitor multiple radio channels and maintain accurate logs and records. Minimum Requirements Age 18+, high school diploma or GED, and English proficiency. Typing 35 words per minute. Colorado driver’s license (or ability to obtain). Availability for rotating shifts, nights/overnights, weekends, and holidays. Ability to earn/maintain required certifications within one year (APCO, EMD, NIMS, Notary). Inside the Communications Center You’ll work onsite in a fast‑paced communications center supporting the City of Cortez and Montezuma County area. A shift may start with system checks and reviewing updates, then move quickly between call‑taking and radio traffic as activity changes. You’ll gather details from callers—sometimes calm, sometimes distressed—and keep information organized as situations evolve. Training is structured: classroom instruction, online modules, and about three months of guided, on‑the‑job learning to build confidence and consistency.
