Summary

Supports the Operations Manager in overseeing daily wastewater treatment plant operations, pump stations, collection systems, and related infrastructure. This role coordinates shift supervisors and operating personnel, monitors treatment performance, ensures regulatory compliance, and promotes safe, reliable, and efficient operations. The position primarily supports afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts and provides operational leadership when assigned. Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate daily staffing, shift coverage, work assignments, and communication between operating teams.

• Monitor treatment processes, SCADA systems, laboratory results, operating reports, and collection system performance.

• Support and supervise operations staff, including coaching, performance evaluations, training, and employee development.

• Maintain operating procedures, schedules, checklists, shift logs, sampling records, and regulatory documentation.

• Coordinate preventive maintenance, equipment shutdowns, capital projects, contractor activities, and commissioning.

• Support emergency response, wet-weather operations, after-hours coverage, and incident reporting.

• Ensure compliance with applicable environmental permits, safety standards, and operational procedures.

• Collaborate with laboratory, maintenance, engineering, and process teams to optimize treatment performance.

• Assist with operating budgets, inventory management, purchasing requirements, and contracted services.

• Identify operational risks, recommend improvements, and prepare reports and recommendations for management.

• Promote workplace safety, proper PPE usage, hazard reporting, and environmental management practices.

• Provide on-call support and serve as a backup Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC), as authorized.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in wastewater treatment, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent education and experience may be considered.

• Five or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in wastewater utilities or a similar industry preferred.

• Virginia Wastewater Works Operator Class 1 License required, or ability to obtain it within one year.

• Experience with wastewater treatment processes, SCADA, pumping and collection systems, maintenance management, regulatory documentation, and emergency response.

• Knowledge of environmental permits, laboratory testing, industrial safety, OSHA requirements, and utility operations.

• Strong leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with asset management or work order systems.

• Ability to work rotating operational demands, respond to emergencies, walk and stand for extended periods, and occasionally lift up to 80 pounds.

Work Environment

The role involves indoor and outdoor facility operations, occasional exposure to hot and humid conditions, and strict adherence to safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
