Position Overview

The role of Head, Global Medical Information & Scientific Communications is a senior leadership position within the Global Portfolio Division reporting to the Chief Medical Officer. The incumbent is a critical member of the Global Medical Leadership Team (GMLT), contributing, defining, and shaping the overall strategy and tactics of the GM organization, providing line‑management responsibilities and oversight for medical function activities within scientific communications and medical information. The primary objective is to drive excellence and support the medical strategy teams by providing specialist knowledge and capabilities across disease‑area strategies. The incumbent will engage with cross‑functional partners, advance digital innovation, and utilize data analytics to support medical affairs.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategy Development and Leadership:
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance to cross‑functional stakeholders, regions, and countries.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to integrate medical affairs into overall ways of working.
  • Develop and update SOPs, ensuring compliance with industry trends, regulatory changes, and scientific advancements.
  • Lead the development and implementation of scientific communication strategies, using advanced technologies and AI tools.
  • Utilize AI‑driven analytics to monitor and evaluate communication impact, making data‑driven decisions.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and AI advancements, integrating relevant innovations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and technological proficiency.
• Scientific Communications Strategy and Management:
  • Lead a combined team of Medical Communications and Publications.
  • Provide strategic oversight to the Medical Communications Center of Excellence.
  • Ensure adherence to international publication guidelines, ethical considerations, and industry best practices.
  • Lead the publication Center of Excellence framework for uniform standards across the organization.
  • Guide the development, review, and execution of medical communication plans, congress plans, integrated communications, and other materials.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional groups to align representation at scientific conferences, advisory boards, and other forums.
  • Oversee creation of accurate, compelling scientific information for health‑care professionals and key opinion leaders.
  • Review and approve scientific content for promotional and non‑promotional materials, ensuring alignment with medical strategy and regulatory compliance.
• Medical Information:
  • Provide strategic oversight for the medical information Center of Excellence.
  • Ensure development and maintenance of comprehensive medical information materials, including letters, FAQs, and standard responses.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree in life sciences (PharmD, MD, PhD) or equivalent.
• 15+ years of experience in medical affairs leadership roles in the biopharmaceutical industry, preferably within a matrix or franchise structure.
• Strong knowledge of AI and machine learning applications in healthcare.
• In‑depth understanding of medical publications, scientific communications, and medical information processes.
• Strong knowledge of regulatory guidelines and compliance requirements for medical affairs activities.
• Proven leadership and people‑management skills, inspiring and motivating teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, conveying complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
• Strategic mindset with the ability to think critically and make informed decisions.

• Demonstrated business acumen.
• Track record of fostering open discussion, information exchange, trust, and teamwork across countries, regions, and functions.
• Ability to manage multiple stakeholders across GM and across business units.
• Strategic leadership, collaboration, innovation, program oversight, and mentorship, with strong talent assessment and hiring decisions.
• Experience with legal, compliance, and regulatory guidelines related to research trials and publications.
• Experience working in a matrixed environment, leading large teams without direct line‑management authority.
• Track record of leading business process transformation and organizational culture change.
• Operational experience in pharmaceutical drug development, including direct exposure to clinical development.
• Leadership in managing large, multi‑disciplinary globally dispersed teams.
• Ability to work across diverse cultures.
• Effective partnership with key stakeholders (GMLT peers, Finance, Ethics & Compliance, HR).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English required, other languages a plus).
• Results orientation and accountability.
• Good analytical skills in medical, scientific, and technical information.
• Unquestioned ethics.

Other Job Requirements

• Ability to travel up to 25% of time (domestic and international).
• Some activities may involve early or late meetings and attendance at scientific meetings on holidays and weekends.

Location: Cambridge, MA

U.S. Base Salary Range: $281,400.00 – $442,200.00

The salary will be based on qualifications, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location. U.S. employees may be eligible for short‑term and/or long‑term incentives, medical/dental/vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with company match, disability coverage, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, paid volunteer time off, holidays, well‑being benefits, sick time, and paid vacation.
