Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Ortho/Spine/ Bariatrics Unit ! Full Time day shift position in Suffolk, VA!
Hours:7p-7a with rotating weekends.
Sign on bonus up to $20,000 available for qualified candidates.
About the Unit:
1 East Surgery Unit is a 24-bed unit specializing in orthopedics, spine, and bariatrics, designed to provide high-quality, short-stay care. The team also sees high acuity surgical patients from Endoscopy, General surgery and GI. Average patient stay is 1 to 2 days. The RN staff can expect a 1:5 or 1:6 ratio and can expect an average of 6 to 8 patient discharges per shift. It is a well-staffed, fast-paced environment that values ongoing staff development through a comprehensive orientation program, where managers and educators meet biweekly to refine learning strategies and enhance clinical skills. This makes 1 East Surgery an excellent environment for both experienced Registered Nurses and new graduates eager to build their expertise. The team is supported by Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) who assist with 8 to 12 patients and assist with ambulation, labs, and other patient care tasks, ensuring seamless patient support. The presence of dedicated Unit Coordinators and experienced preceptors fosters a nurturing learning environment, making it an ideal place for skill development, professional growth, and long-term career advancement for those committed to excellence in surgical and orthopedic patient care.
Our surgeons and team are nationally recognized for excellence through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program ( MBSAQIP ). To achieve this, we voluntarily undergo in-depth independent peer evaluations. MBSAQIP accreditation promotes uniform standards and continuous quality improvement.

The Registered Nursing (RN) is responsible to perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation) along with the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence- based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing. The RN possesses clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.
Education
Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
Students in process of obtaining degree in Registered nursing
Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)
Certification/Licensure
Registered nursing License (Required)
Students in progress of obtaining licensure
BLS required within 90 days of hire
Experience
1 year of acute care nursing experience (preferred)
No experience required
Previous healthcare experience in GI, Endo, Surgical, stepdown, or pre/post (preferred)
