Maintenance Manager

Location: Farmingdale and Amityville, New York (On-Site) Pay: From $100,000 per year

POSITION SUMMARY

L&S Packing Company is seeking an experienced, hands‑on Maintenance Manager to lead maintenance and reliability across our two Long Island manufacturing facilities. This position is responsible for leading the maintenance team, improving equipment reliability, managing preventive maintenance programs, overseeing repairs and projects, maintaining regulatory compliance, and controlling maintenance‑related spending. This is not strictly an administrative position. The Maintenance Manager must be comfortable working directly with equipment, leading complex troubleshooting, reading prints and manuals, identifying and sourcing components, and ensuring critical issues are resolved effectively. A key initial priority will be establishing and driving consistent use of our newly implemented Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) , including equipment and parts data, preventive maintenance programs, work‑order standards, and maintenance reporting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance Leadership & Team Management Lead, schedule, coach, and develop maintenance technicians and mechanics supporting multiple shifts and two facilities. Establish daily and weekly priorities based on safety, production needs, equipment criticality, labor, and parts availability. Set clear expectations for workmanship, attendance, documentation, housekeeping, shift handoffs, and communication. Evaluate team performance, identify skill gaps, provide technical coaching and cross‑training, and address performance concerns in coordination with HR. Maintain appropriate shift and emergency coverage and ensure open repairs and production risks are communicated effectively. CMMS & Maintenance Planning Lead the implementation and ongoing administration of the maintenance department's CMMS. Maintain accurate equipment records, asset hierarchy, preventive maintenance schedules, parts information, manuals, drawings, and equipment history. Establish effective work‑order standards, priorities, scheduling, downtime reporting, and closeout procedures. Develop and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs for production equipment, utilities, buildings, and safety systems. Use CMMS reporting to manage PM completion, maintenance backlog, recurring failures, equipment history, parts usage, and maintenance performance. Troubleshooting & Equipment Reliability Provide hands‑on technical leadership during complex or high‑impact equipment failures involving mechanical, electrical, controls, pneumatic, hydraulic, refrigeration, boiler, steam, and facility systems. Troubleshoot automated production and packaging equipment, including batching and cooking systems, pumps, mixers, fillers, cappers, conveyors, coding and labeling equipment, and related utilities. Lead root‑cause analysis for significant breakdowns and recurring problems and ensure corrective actions are completed and effective. Maintain accurate electrical and mechanical drawings, equipment documentation, control‑system backups, and records of equipment changes. Partner with Production and Quality during equipment startup and turnover to ensure repairs meet safety, quality, and performance expectations. Identify, research, cross‑reference, and source mechanical, electrical, controls, and facility components, including obsolete and long‑lead parts. Develop and maintain a critical spare‑parts program based on equipment risk, failure history, lead time, and cost. Maintain accurate parts inventory and storeroom records. Build strong relationships with manufacturers, distributors, repair services, and technical contractors. Obtain and compare quotations, coordinate contractor work, and ensure outside work meets company expectations. Safety, Food Safety & Compliance Ensure maintenance activities comply with OSHA requirements, company safety policies, LOTO, machine guarding, electrical safety, and other applicable requirements. Ensure repairs meet cGMP, sanitary design, food safety, allergen control, foreign‑material, and sanitation standards. Maintain accurate, audit‑ready maintenance, inspection, calibration, contractor, and corrective‑action records. Support customer, regulatory, GFSI, and internal audits. Projects, Budgeting & Continuous Improvement Lead or support equipment installations, upgrades, capital projects, commissioning, and startup activities. Develop project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments and monitor project costs and progress. Manage maintenance labor, parts, repair, service contract, and capital spending. Use downtime, maintenance, quality, safety, and cost data to identify reliability and continuous‑improvement opportunities. Provide plant leadership with clear updates on equipment condition, major breakdowns, staffing, PM status, projects, risks, and recommended actions. Work closely with Production, Quality, Safety, Sanitation, HR, and plant leadership to coordinate priorities and support uninterrupted operations.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Required Experience Minimum of 8 years of progressive industrial maintenance experience , including at least 4 years supervising or managing maintenance employees in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. Experience in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, or another regulated, sanitation‑sensitive manufacturing environment; food manufacturing strongly preferred . Demonstrated success leading a multi‑shift maintenance team and improving maintenance execution and equipment reliability. Hands‑on experience implementing, building out, or significantly improving a CMMS , including asset data, PMs, work orders, equipment history, parts, backlog management, and reporting. Strong experience leading complex troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis on automated production and packaging equipment. Proven ability to identify, research, cross‑reference, and source mechanical, electrical, controls, and facility components. Education & Technical Knowledge Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred. Technical education, recognized trade training, or an equivalent combination of education and substantial hands‑on experience will be considered. Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical and electrical systems, motors, pumps, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics, sensors, instrumentation, VFDs, PLC diagnostics, and HMI fault information. Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, manuals, specifications, and parts diagrams. Working knowledge of plant utilities, preventive and predictive maintenance, root‑cause analysis, OSHA requirements, cGMPs, and food manufacturing safety standards. Strong computer skills, including CMMS administration, Microsoft Excel, data analysis, and written reporting. Leadership & Work Style Calm and decisive under production pressure with strong organizational and follow‑through skills. Fair, direct, and professional when setting expectations and addressing performance concerns. Able to earn the respect of experienced tradespeople through technical credibility, consistency, and hands‑on leadership. Strong communicator who can explain technical issues and business risks to employees, leadership, vendors, and nontechnical personnel.

SCHEDULE & WORK REQUIREMENTS

Full‑time, on‑site position with regular work at both the Farmingdale and Amityville facilities. Must be available to support multiple shifts and respond to urgent plant issues outside normal working hours when required.
