Clinical Director

Clinical DirectorThe Clinical Director is responsible for overseeing all clinical operations within the ASAM-designated treatment facility across all levels of care, including residential, and partial hospitalization. This role provides leadership, oversight, and clinical supervision to licensed and associate-level clinical staff while ensuring delivery of high-quality, ethical, and evidence-based care. The Clinical Director ensures compliance with state, federal, licensing, accreditation, and payer requirements while fostering a culture of accountability, professional growth, collaboration, and clinical excellence.Key ResponsibilitiesOversees daily clinical operations across all ASAM levels of care within the facilityProvides clinical supervision and oversight for associate-level and licensed clinical staff in accordance with state board requirementsEnsures clinical programming, documentation, and services align with ASAM criteria, DBHDS regulations, CARF standards, and payer expectationsSupports development, implementation, and continuous improvement of clinical programming and treatment servicesReviews clinical documentation for quality, compliance, medical necessity, and appropriateness of careProvides leadership, mentorship, training, and performance management to clinical team membersCollaborates with nursing, medical, operations, admissions, utilization review, and executive leadership teams to support continuity of care and client outcomesParticipates in treatment planning, case consultation, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and utilization management processes as neededAssists with audits, investigations, corrective action plans, accreditation activities, and regulatory readiness effortsMaintains awareness of evolving behavioral health regulations, payer requirements, and best practices to ensure ongoing compliance and operational excellenceMinimum QualificationsEducation / CredentialsMaster's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related behavioral health field requiredActive independent clinical license in the state of Virginia required (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or equivalent)Qualified to provide board-approved supervision to associate-level clinicians requiredCPR/First Aid certification preferredExperienceMinimum of 5 years of clinical experience in behavioral health and/or substance use disorder treatment requiredMinimum of 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferredExperience working within ASAM levels of care, including residential and outpatient treatment settings requiredExperience with Medicaid-funded services, utilization review, accreditation standards, and state licensing requirements preferredKnowledge / SkillsStrong knowledge of ASAM criteria, substance use disorder treatment, co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based interventionsUnderstanding of DBHDS regulations, CARF standards, documentation requirements, and medical necessity criteriaExcellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and team development skillsStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environmentAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teamsProficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation systemsAbility to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards at all timesWorking ConditionsDirect care and administrative leadership roleFull-time on-site position with flexibility based on operational needsMay require occasional evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilitiesWork is performed in a behavioral healthcare treatment environment with exposure to individuals experiencing mental health and substance use disordersWhy This Role MattersThe Clinical Director plays a critical role in ensuring clients receive safe, ethical, and effective treatment services throughout every stage of care.
