This role involves collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other surgical staff to ensure exceptional patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. General Summary The Surgical Technologist is a skilled professional who applies sterile techniques and operates technical equipment to assist in surgeries, particularly C-sections in Labor & Delivery settings. This position requires anticipation of surgical team needs, dexterity, and meticulous care of surgical instruments and environments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with surgical procedures in the Labor & Delivery operating room, including C-sections. Prepare and maintain sterile surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring proper setup and restocking of delivery and surgical rooms. Coordinate inventory management with Sterile Processing departments. Demonstrate aseptic and sterile techniques, including surgical scrub procedures. Perform unit-related tasks such as answering phones, patient checks, nursing aide duties, and electronic charting. Maintain cleanliness and stock of C-section suites, OB/Nursery equipment, delivery rooms, cribs, and nursery areas. Assist patients with activities of daily living including meals, grooming, skin care, and toileting. Provide postpartum care such as application of K-Pads, ice packs, and binders. Collect specimens, take vital signs, and document intake and output. Communicate any changes in patient condition or behavior to appropriate personnel promptly. Education Graduation from an accredited program in Nursing, Practical Nursing, or Surgical Technology is required. Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with documented cross-training to the scrub tech role is also acceptable. Experience Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Surgical Assistants should have at least three years of scrub experience. Certification and Licenses Completion of surgical scrub training and orientation in both Operating Room and OB settings is required. American Heart Association BLS certification must be obtained prior to completing orientation. Preference is given to candidates holding Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credentials. Mental and Physical Requirements This role demands considerable mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching. Working Conditions Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases through blood and body fluids is expected, along with occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Physical discomfort is minimal but present.
