Bus Driver Trainer

Reports to: Transportation Safety Coordinator

Primary Purpose:

Participate in the employee training activities of the Transportation department to ensure that employees are optimally trained to operate a district school bus and adequately serve the transportation needs of the students.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Minimum of High School Diploma required

Acquire and/or maintain Specialist level certification or greater through Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT Trainer preferred)

Must pass DOT physicals and alcohol/drug tests

Acceptable driving record in accordance with DPS standards

Acceptable criminal history record

Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate or a valid Enrollment Certificate

Completion (within six months) of TEEX Train the Trainer class

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Good computer skills

Excellent communication skills

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior

Ability to safely operate a school bus

Effective telephone and communications skills

Working knowledge of office equipment, such as copiers, scanners, fax, and computers

Knowledge of multi-line phone system

Proficient map reading skills

Ability to maintain good relationship with Grapevine-Colleyville ISD staff (supervisors, fellow employees, coaches, principals, etc.) and ensure positive interactions with all patrons and public

Flexible and open to changes

Detail oriented

Maintain an orderly work environment

Conduct accident retraining

Must be able to maintain confidentiality

Experience:

At least 3 years school transportation experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Maintains the transportation training program that is in compliance with DOT, DPS, TEA and GCISD regulations, policies, and procedures. Ensures all employees are trained on all aspects of the program.
  2. Makes presentations during driver in-service training and small group meetings and assists in department-wide staff development programs as needed.
  3. Makes school bus safety presentations to schools, as requested.
  4. Assist in school bus emergency evacuation training
  5. Serves as focal point to in-process new employees for the department.
  6. Confers and cooperates with other management personnel in formulating administrative and operational policies and procedures.
  7. Serve as a substitute bus driver or monitor as needed, performs duties and functions of these positions and maintains all licenses and certifications required to perform these duties.
  8. Attends conferences and meetings (both in and outside the District) to enhance professional development and growth.
  9. Perform behind-the-wheel evaluations of all drivers and random field observations, as necessary.
  10. Perform post-accident training according to the Accident Committee findings.
  11. Coordinate training for Emergency Drivers and Defensive Driving for white-fleet drivers.
  12. Construct and maintain a school bus road-e-o course and serve as participant and/or trainer for annual competitions.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control. Sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; pushing, pulling, moderate lifting. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Ability to lift or drag 25-40 pounds in an emergency.
