Job Description:\n\nAbout the Role\nJack’s Family Restaurants is seeking an experienced Software Developer to join our Information Technology team and help build, integrate, and modernize the technology and data platforms that support our restaurants and corporate operations. This role combines software development, data engineering, systems integration, and cloud development with a strong emphasis on Amazon Web Services (AWS).\nThe successful candidate will work across on-premises and cloud environments, develop applications and integrations, maintain critical data pipelines, migrate legacy processes to AWS, and transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured restaurant data into standardized formats used across the organization.\nThis is a hands-on role requiring strong technical ownership, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating with Jack’s IT team, business stakeholders, restaurant operators, and technology partners.\nRestaurant Data Experience\nThe candidate must have practical experience working with data generated by restaurant technology systems. Relevant experience includes:\n· Point of Sale (POS) transaction data\n· Menu, item, modifier, combo, and pricing data\n· Discounts, promotions, taxes, and tenders\n· Digital and online ordering data\n· Loyalty and guest data\n· Restaurant sales, transaction, and product-mix data\n· Inventory and operational data\n· Labor and workforce data\n· Restaurant location and organizational hierarchies\n· Data integrations between restaurant technology platforms\nThe candidate should understand restaurant-specific data complexities such as business dates, dayparts, order channels, location-level configuration, time zones, menu hierarchies, modifiers, combos, discounts, taxes, tenders, and mapping data across multiple systems.\nKey ResponsibilitiesSoftware Development & Integration\n· Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software applications, integrations, services, and automation supporting Jack’s restaurant and corporate systems.\n· Develop primarily using Python, SQL, and PL/SQL, along with other appropriate technologies as needed.\n· Build integrations between restaurant platforms, internal applications, databases, APIs, and cloud services.\n· Develop scalable solutions that reduce manual processes and improve the reliability and accessibility of restaurant data.\n· Support and modernize internally developed applications and legacy processes.\n· Troubleshoot application, integration, database, and data-processing issues.\n· Participate in code reviews and follow established development, testing, deployment, and documentation standards.\n· Use Git and version-control workflows to manage application code, database code, and configuration changes.Data Engineering & Architecture\n· Design, build, maintain, and optimize data pipelines supporting restaurant and enterprise applications.\n· Write complex SQL and PL/SQL queries to aggregate, transform, validate, reconcile, and standardize data.\n· Develop and maintain PL/SQL packages, views, and materialized views that transform restaurant data into standardized columnar structures.\n· Work with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, including extensive use of JSON.\n· Map JSON structures and convert semi-structured or unstructured data into relational and columnar formats.\n· Design and maintain dimensional models and star-schema structures appropriate for restaurant data.\n· Work with RDBMS, OLTP, and NoSQL database environments.\n· Apply data-quality validation and testing practices throughout data pipelines and integrations.AWS & Cloud Modernization\n· Participate in migrating on-premises relational database processes, integrations, and applications to AWS.\n· Develop solutions using AWS services including Amazon Redshift, S3, Lambda, Athena, DynamoDB, EventBridge, Amplify, and QuickSight.\n· Help select appropriate AWS services and architectures based on application and data requirements.\n· Manage or assist with AWS IAM roles, permissions, and security configurations.\n· Develop cloud-native processes that improve scalability, resiliency, security, and maintainability.\n· Support cloud object-storage environments and data ingestion and processing workflows.Database Administration & Support\n· Administer and manage database users, accounts, roles, and permissions across on-premises and cloud environments.\n· Work directly with SQL Server, MySQL, and Amazon Redshift.\n· Monitor and troubleshoot database processes, queries, integrations, and application dependencies.\n· Optimize queries and processes to improve application and data-processing performance.\n· Support production issues involving databases, applications, integrations, and data pipelines when required.AI-Assisted Development\nJack’s supports the responsible use of artificial intelligence to improve developer productivity, software quality, and speed to delivery. The Software Developer should be comfortable using tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and AI-assisted coding environments to:\n· Assist with software development, debugging, and refactoring.\n· Generate, analyze, and optimize SQL queries.\n· Assist with documentation and automated testing.\n· Accelerate development while maintaining human review and validation.\n· Identify opportunities to automate repetitive software and data-engineering processes.\nAI-generated code must be appropriately reviewed, tested, secured, and validated before being deployed to production.Documentation & Quality\n· Document applications, integrations, database structures, data models, APIs, pipelines, dependencies, and support processes.\n· Maintain technical documentation that enables other IT team members to understand and support developed solutions.\n· Create appropriate testing and validation procedures for applications, integrations, and data pipelines.\n· Document changes through Jack’s established change-management and ticketing processes.\n· Design solutions with long-term maintainability, supportability, and operational reliability in mind.Required Qualifications\n· Restaurant data experience: Direct, hands-on professional experience working with restaurant data and restaurant technology environments. This is a non-negotiable requirement.\n· Programming: Strong Python development experience.\n· SQL / PL/SQL: Strong SQL and PL/SQL skills, including complex data transformation and aggregation.\n· Data architecture: Strong understanding of data architecture, dimensional modeling, and star-schema design.\n· JSON: Strong experience loading, parsing, mapping, storing, and transforming JSON data.\n· Database platforms: Experience with RDBMS, OLTP, and NoSQL databases; SQL Server, MySQL, and Redshift experience required.\n· Pipelines: Experience with ETL/ELT and data-pipeline design and best practices.\n· Cloud migration: Experience with on-premises-to-cloud migration projects.\n· Object storage: Experience with cloud object storage such as Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage.\n· Version control: Proficiency with Git and established version-control workflows.\n· AI coding tools: Ability to use AI coding tools such as Claude and ChatGPT to assist with development.\n· Data quality: Familiarity with data-quality validation and testing practices.\n· Work style: Ability to work independently in a remote environment and collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.\n· Travel: Ability and willingness to travel to Jack’s corporate office in Birmingham, Alabama, and other locations as business needs require.Preferred Qualifications\n· Strong hands-on experience across the AWS ecosystem.\n· Experience with Amazon Redshift, S3, Lambda, Athena, DynamoDB, EventBridge, Amplify, and/or QuickSight.\n· Experience managing AWS IAM roles and permissions.\n· Strong Google Cloud Platform experience may also be considered.\n· Experience developing REST APIs and system integrations.\n· Experience with restaurant POS, online ordering, loyalty, back-office, inventory, labor, payment, or reporting platforms.\n· Experience working with high-volume, multi-location restaurant transaction data.\n· Experience modernizing legacy database applications and processes.\n· Experience with cloud-native applications or serverless architectures.Key Competencies\n· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.\n· High attention to detail and data accuracy.\n· Understanding of how technology impacts restaurant operations.\n· Ability to investigate complex problems across interconnected systems.\n· Ability to balance development speed with reliability, security, and maintainability.\n· Strong ownership and accountability for delivered solutions.\n· Curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies.\n· Ability to identify opportunities for automation and simplification.\n· Clear written and verbal communication skills.Work Environment\nThis is a remote position with travel based on business needs.
