Secondary Assistant Principal-North Little Rock High School (2026-2027)

Reports To: Building Principal
Grade/Level: 9-12
Amount of Travel Required: As needed
Work Schedule: 207-day contract
Positions Supervised: Students, teachers, and support staff as determined by the building Principal.

Position Summary:


The secondary school assistant principal serves as an assistant to the Principal and performs the duties of an educational leader as directed by the Principal. The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting with the implementation and management of the policies, regulations, and procedures of the District to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe student-centered learning environment that meets and exceeds the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) State Standards, following the approved curricula and directives of the District and DESE. Achieving academic excellence requires that the assistant Principal works collaboratively to lead and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other districts and schools. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for student supervision, planning, curriculum development, extracurricular activities, assisting with personnel management, emergency procedures, resource scheduling, and facilities operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, develop, and implement the total curricular and extracurricular program of the school.
  • Visit classrooms frequently and serve as a resource person to provide individual help to teachers.
  • Responsible for adhering to and communicating the Arkansas Code of Ethics to all certified staff.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships between pupils and staff, school and community, school and central office administrators and staff.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with NLRSD policies and state and federal laws.
  • Evaluate certified staff utilizing the DESE TESS/LEADs evaluation tool.
  • Evaluate classified staff utilizing the NLRSD classified evaluation tool.
  • Maintain and report necessary pupil and staff personnel records.
  • Promote and maintain an environment within the school as it relates to student citizenship in order to optimize student learning.
  • Supervise school activities and attend school functions as scheduled by the Principal.
  • Participate in the School Improvement Plan development.
  • Assist with course revisions, additions, and deletions associated with the school's Course Description Guide.
  • Keep open lines of communication with all stakeholders.
  • Assist with the academic placement of students by contributing to master schedule development.
  • Monitor student progress and teacher reporting.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of professional development activities.
  • Plan and implement new teacher orientation programs.
  • Exhibit skill in teacher observation, evaluation, and employee discipline.
  • Plan and conduct effective conferences with students, parents, and staff.
  • Provide supervision of substitute teachers.
  • Provide new teacher orientation programs for building-level induction of new staff members.
  • Assist with the supervision of all student activities.
  • Assist with placement of Special Education, ELL, and GT students.
  • Implement safety drills associated with fire, tornados, and other emergencies.
  • Keep Crisis Management Manual updated.
  • Maintain visibility at school activities.
  • Supervise students before and after school, between class changes, and during assemblies.
  • Supervise custodial staff, campus supervisors, and other support staff as assigned.
  • Confer with parents and staff to discuss educational activities, policies, and student behavioral or learning problems.
  • Prepare and submit budget requests and recommendations or grant proposals to solicit program funding.
  • Direct and coordinate school maintenance services and the use of school facilities.
  • Counsel and guide students regarding personal, academic, or behavioral issues.
  • Organize and direct committees of specialists, volunteers, and staff to provide technical and advisory assistance for programs.
  • Evaluate curricula, teaching methods, and programs to determine their effectiveness, efficiency, and utilization and to ensure that school activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Set educational standards and goals and help review and suggest policies and procedures to carry them out.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of primary and supplemental staff.
  • Enforce discipline and attendance rules.
  • Observe teaching methods and examine learning materials to evaluate and standardize curricula and teaching techniques and to determine areas where improvement is needed.
  • Establish, coordinate, and oversee particular programs to evaluate student academic achievement.
  • Review and interpret government codes, and develop programs to ensure adherence to codes and facility safety, security, and maintenance.
  • Recommend personnel actions to the Principal as they related to programs and services.
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop and maintain curriculum standards, develop mission statements, and set performance goals and objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Experience:
  • Prior experience as a classroom teacher or building administrator preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, APSCN, and related technical abilities.
Other Requirements:
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Arkansas Educator's License with a Building Level Admin endorsement.
Education:
  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or related subject.

  • Expectations are for the Assistant Principal to display a positive attitude at all times in dealing with students, parents, staff, and others remaining loyal to the Principal and serving as an advisor to the Principal on school-related matters.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The work environment is generally an office environment but frequently includes meeting with students, parents, and others who are dealing with topics related to the school setting. Trips to other schools, other school districts, and out of area meetings and conferences are required. Time away from home is significant. Expectations are for the Assistant Principal to meet the responsibilities of the regular school day and go beyond to include attendance at all after-hour school and civic functions assigned by the Principal. Attendance at indoor and outdoor school activities is necessary to perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to deal with the public, meet deadlines, and work under pressure is required to perform this job.
