Responsibilities Operate x‑ray equipment to scan incoming parcels and packages for the detection of potentially threatening or suspicious materials (contraband) Follow security procedures for confiscation of contraband and notify appropriate institutional staff for investigation Operate postage machines (e.g., postage scale, meter machine) to process incoming and outgoing mail and sort mail for efficient handling Determine class of mail and set postage meters (date, time stamps, openings, bundles, addressing) Complete documentation associated with special mail handling such as certified return receipts or receipts for insurance Ensure prompt handling of time‑sensitive documents that could impact legal notifications, deliver to appropriate office, and pick up mail, parcels, and/or messages Load and unload trucks and distribute contents to various offices Maintain daily records of mail processed for billing purposes Prepare UPS or express letters or packages Maintain records of postage used and/or volume of mail Inventory and distribute supplies Label, fold, and/or staple materials Photocopy materials Deliver and/or pick up documents, packages, and materials Make service calls and assist in repair and/or maintenance of machines Answer inquiries from employees, inmates, and the general public regarding U.S. Postal regulations Explain postal procedures and requirements for insured, certified, and other postal options Explain differences in postal rates and classes of mail Track lost or misdirected mail Stuff envelopes Benefits Medical Coverage Free Dental, Vision, and Basic Life Insurance premiums after completion of eligibility period Paid time off, including vacation, personal, sick leave and 11 paid holidays per year Childbirth, Adoption, and Foster Care leave Education and Development Opportunities (Employee Development Funds, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and more) Qualifications Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and reading common English vocabulary.
