Job Summary Assumes primary responsibility for patient care including examination, evaluation, treatment planning, and administration of Respiratory Care procedures in response to a physician’s order. The position is primarily focused on the management of mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients, with coverage of an active Emergency Department, Cath Lab, and acute care floors. The program is new at BIDMC, offering an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing team. BIDMC’s affiliation with the Harvard School of Medicine requires the Respiratory Therapist to be intimately involved in the mentorship of physicians in training and the delivery of state‑of‑the‑art Respiratory Care. Therapists also play an integral role in several ongoing studies in the Intensive Care Units. Essential Responsibilities Assess patient condition based on medical history, observation, examination, physician’s diagnosis, laboratory findings, and results of specific tests or respiratory function and other appropriate diagnostic procedures. Develop or modify the respiratory care plan and make specific recommendations to physicians regarding indicated therapy. Serve as a role model for respiratory care students and other team members providing clinical procedures related to respiratory care. Function as the Team Leader during shifts when no management team member is physically present on site. Attend and participate in internal and external educational meetings, departmental in‑services, staff meetings, and educational conferences to maintain and enhance clinical competence and meet state license requirements. Participate in the department’s performance improvement activities, applying findings of clinical research and performance assessment to improve patient care at BIDMC. Develop and implement patient/family education plans to meet patient needs at the time of clinical assessment, facilitating education by assessing learning needs. Required Qualifications Associate’s degree required in Respiratory Care/Cardiopulmonary Science. Respiratory Therapist License required; Registration required: Reg Respiratory Therapist. Basic Life Support certificate required. 0–1 year(s) related work experience. Experience with computer systems, including web‑based applications and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). Work requires rotation to off‑shifts and weekend hours; must be available to work on‑call as necessary. Physical Nature of the Job Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The job is physical in nature and requires standing and/or moving around during the majority of the shift. Pay Range $44.75 – $65.16 per hour. The pay range listed is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Compensation may exceed the base rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other applicable pay practices. Sign‑On Bonus BIDMC is offering up to $10,000 in sign‑on bonuses for Respiratory Therapist II positions. Bonuses are paid out in two installments: half within the first 30 days of employment and the remaining half within 90 days, subject to applicable taxes and good standing status. Part‑time positions are prorated based on the full‑time bonus structure; per diem employees are not eligible.
