PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:   

The Vehicle & Equipment Management Leader II directs and participates in the daily maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the City's diverse fleet including light duty vehicles (police/emergency), heavy-duty trucks (sanitation/dump), and specialized grounds equipment. This "working foreman" role ensures all city assets are safe, reliable, and compliant with state and federal regulations while supervising a team of multi skilled technicians.

  ESSENTIAL TASKS:

• Supervises and participates in equipment maintenance; reviews the work of garage crews and contractors.
• Assign work orders to technicians, monitor daily progress and adjust schedules to meet deadlines and optimize production.
• Maintains continuous contact with City departments regarding maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Conducts periodic spot checks and final road tests on completed repairs to minimize "comebacks" and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Inspects and documents all reported vehicle and equipment maintenance; issues repair orders to vehicle and equipment maintenance crews; continually checks on repair jobs to determine work progress from start to completion.
• Instructs fleet employees, full time and temporary, in the appropriate safety equipment usage and safe operation of vehicles and equipment as required by law. Also maintains a clean and hazardous-free work environment and ensures proper disposal of waste.
• Maintains accurate service records pertaining to the maintenance of vehicles and equipment, and daily work performed and handles parts inventory requests.
• Learns to operate new technologies as they are developed and implemented.
• Assists in recruiting and training of new staff. Assists in conducting performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and upskilling for the technician team.
• Operates office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and phone systems, and uses computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications; learns to operate new office technologies as they are developed and implemented.
• Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.

• Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Vehicle and Equipment Management Leader II reports directly to the Garage Supervisor. 

The Vehicle and Equipment Management Leader II supervises the Automotive Service Technician, Automotive Mechanic I and Automotive Mechanic II.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Training and Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years gasoline, diesel and hydraulic mechanics including two (2) years at the journeyman level performing repairs on construction and other heavy equipment and at least two (2) years of supervisory experience required; or an equivalent combination of education (such as graduation from an automotive trade school) and experience. 

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Must have knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform required maintenance and repair functions.  Must be able to maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and departments.  Ability to work long and sometimes irregular hours under difficult conditions as required.  Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and maintain repair records.

Physical Requirements:  The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  On a case-by-case basis, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity will be needed enough to use a key board and telephone.  Occasional sitting and standing is required.  Frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to fifty (50) pounds.  Occasional lifting up to 80 pounds, reaching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, twisting, handling and repetitive movements.  Vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.  Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential.  Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates:  Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class B CDL. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work in this classification is both indoors and outdoors.  Will travel to other City locations as required.  Requires ability to maintain on-call status.
