Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Computed Tomography (CT)

Summary This incumbent's principal responsibilities are to perform Computerized Transaxial scan procedures (CT or CAT scans) exams for the patients and is part of the group of Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists at the Minneapolis - MN VA Health Care System. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or mammography duties performed independently as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and has taken and passed the designated examination. Advanced certification may be supported by on‑job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist when the incumbent does not possess an advanced certification. Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or equivalent) in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program with a certificate or associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies. Credentialing standards under Public Law 97‑35 and 42 CFR Part 75 must be met. Physical requirements per VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English language proficiency: spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Optionally covered by the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees. Grade determination: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist – GS‑9 qualifies as an advanced DRT and carries out assigned tasks independently; experience may include special and complex imaging procedures. Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to balance patient and staff needs, assess contraindications, apply first aid, perform basic life support, maintain aseptic techniques, administer intravenous methods, provide pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural care. Must be able to interpret examination requests, understand organ systems, and judge image acceptability. Specialized Assignments (CT): Requires knowledge of cross‑sectional human anatomy and specific training in spiral and multi‑slice CT, 3‑D reconstruction, and peripheral vascular examinations. Independent duties require advanced ARRT certification. Reference: Duties Perform CT examinations of chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, extremities, neck, and other areas. Assist the radiologist in performing interventional procedures under CT guidance and all general imaging exams. Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table, prepare room and equipment, and administer contrast and other chemicals as necessary. Follow prescribed protocols, observe patients during procedures, report complications or unusual events, and complete computer work and required forms. Maintain daily phantoms for quality assurance. Administer contrast material under radiologist direction according to protocols. Maximize patient throughput by coordinating with escort, ward secretaries, nursing personnel, etc. Provide quality assurance of imaging prior to PACS transmission. Participate in on‑call rotations to provide 24‑hour coverage, some holidays, and annual meetings. Work schedule includes Friday–Monday 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, every other Thursday 3:30 pm to 12:00 am, and on‑call duties. Recruitment incentive: sign‑on bonus may be authorized for highly qualified candidates. Permanent change of station (relocation assistance) not authorized. Compensation: competitive salary with regular increases, paid time off ranging from 37 to 50 days annually comprised of leave, sick leave, and federal holidays. Parental leave: up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months employment. Childcare subsidy: for employees with family income below $144,000, up to 25% of eligible costs, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66.
