Family Medicine Physician (Big Otter)

Job Objective: Provides professional medical patient care by interviewing, examining, and treating of clinical patients in order to meet their medical needs. Educates patients on wellness, prevention, and early detection by providing materials and resources to the patients and families.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties:• Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
• Order, perform, and interpret tests and analyze records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients' conditions.
• Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies.
• Prescribe medication in accordance with the West Virginia statute and professional practice guidelines.
• Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results.
• Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
• Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
• Advise patients concerning diet, activity, hygiene, and disease prevention.
• Refers patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.
• Coordinate work with nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, and other health care providers.
• Participate in staff outreach and off-site health care programs in the CCWV service area as assigned by the Medical Director.
• Participate in peer review, quality assurance, provider meetings, and other clinical meetings.
• Assist in updating protocols and principles of practice as requested.
• Adhere to the highest standards of medical practice, ethics, and professionalism at all times.
• Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations, for example, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, and hemorrhages.
• Perform clinical procedures such as:
o Venipuncture
o Electrocardiogram
o Care and suturing of minor lacerations
o Casting and splinting
o Control of external hemorrhage
o Application of dressings and bandages
o Removal of superficial foreign bodies
o Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
o Audiometry screening
o Visual screening; and
o Carry out aseptic and isolation techniques
• Provide counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems, limitations, and abilities.
• Other duties as assigned. Additional Responsibilities:
• He/she participates in other assigned duties as designated by the Medical Director. Also, perform tasks supportive of the job's essential functions, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
• Oversees mid-level medical staff as assigned.
• Comply with the CCWV Infection Control plan, which includes personally utilizing universal precautions.
• Recommends changes in all clinical areas and/or general areas to improve patient flow, medical records, billing practices, and appointment practices.
• Serve as Preceptor for local medical students performing family medicine/primary care rotations. Patient Satisfaction:
• Assist patients, family members, or other clients with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy; and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner.
• Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communications are facilitated.
• Identify yourself in a pleasant and positive manner.
• Take responsibility for helping the caller. Teamwork:
• Assist in the orientation/training of new Team Members.
• Consistently work in a positive and cooperative manner with fellow Team Members.
• Assist other Team Members in the performance of their assignments.

• Investigate and follow through on unusual orders or requests for service or information.
• Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents so follow-up and/or prevention can occur.
• Record/report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment and remove any faulty equipment from service.
• Consistently evaluate work and determine if further steps are needed to meet patient expectations.
• Take the initiative to do or redo inadequate or incomplete work, even if it is not yours.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Productivity/ Efficiency:
• Consistently demonstrate the ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
• Consistently demonstrate the ability to take the initiative to make decisions/choices without direct supervision. Adherence to Departmental Policies:
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and the ability to reference them from appropriate books and manuals.
• Comply with infection control policies and procedures, including the Exposure Control Plan, which reflects OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe working environment for self and others.

• Able to lift 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist fallen patients. Able to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.

o Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.)
o Chemical hazards. Qualifications/Requirements/Skills:
• Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques.
• Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment. Education/Training/Experience:
• Medical degree in medicine from an accredited school and licensed to practice in West Virginia.
• Current DEA, ACLS, and PALS certificates.
• Current State of West Virginia licensure required.
• Successful completion of family practice/internal medicine residency program.
