Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Construction Accounting Manager to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and support financial management for a construction-focused organization.

This position reports directly to the CFO and works closely with Accounts Payable, Project Managers, HR/Payroll, department managers, and senior leadership. The role will initially focus on special projects as directed by the CFO while taking responsibility for overseeing core accounting functions.

The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience, management experience, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to accurately manage financial information in a deadline-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Management

• Manage accounting personnel and oversee day-to-day accounting operations.
• Maintain the general ledger and related accounting systems.
• Manage and maintain Sage and other construction-related accounting software.
• Perform and/or review standard journal entries as part of the month-end close.
• Reconcile various sub-ledgers, including fixed assets.
• Maintain accurate financial records and effective internal controls.
• Prepare monthly financial statements and other financial reports for management.

Construction Accounting & Job Costing

• Meet regularly with department and project managers to review financial reports.
• Review construction job financials and identify, analyze, and document project variances.
• Support project budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting.
• Monitor job costs, project budgets, progress billing, and change orders.
• Assist management with accounting-related analysis, research, budgeting, and business planning.

Cash Management & Financial Reporting

• Prepare cash management reports and monitor company cash flows.
• Proactively identify potential cash flow or financial concerns.
• Prepare periodic operational reports required for insurance renewals, regulatory requirements, and other business needs.
• Assist management with financial analysis and decision-making.

Accounts Receivable, Payable & Payroll

• Oversee Accounts Receivable activities and collections.
• Oversee Accounts Payable personnel and processes.
• Oversee payroll activities and related regulatory filings.
• Prepare and/or review sales tax reconciliations and related filings.

Compliance & Internal Controls

• Maintain accurate accounting records and appropriate internal controls.
• Support compliance with applicable accounting, tax, payroll, insurance, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain an understanding of commercial insurance, bonding, and employee benefit programs.
• Follow company policies, department procedures, and established accounting controls.

Collaboration & Leadership

• Work closely with the CFO, Project Managers, department managers, HR/Payroll, and senior management.
• Communicate financial information, variances, and reporting clearly to management.
• Interact with employees and business partners in a professional and ethical manner.
• Provide leadership and oversight to accounting personnel.
• Support special projects and other business initiatives as directed by the CFO.
• Perform additional duties as assigned based on business needs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 8+ years of accounting experience.
• 3+ years of accounting management or supervisory experience.
• 3+ years of construction accounting experience.
• Construction industry experience is required.
• Experience managing project budgets and financial reporting.
• Strong understanding of accounting processes and financial controls.
• Strong Excel skills.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with management and cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Sage Construction Software .
• Knowledge of Work in Progress (WIP) accounting and job costing.
• Experience with progress billing and construction change orders.
• Experience with construction project financial reporting.
• Knowledge of commercial insurance, bonding, and employee benefit programs.

Schedule & Availability

• Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on business needs.
• Overtime may occasionally be required, including evenings or weekends.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Frequently Required

• Operate computers and standard office equipment, including calculators, printers, and copiers.
• Remain seated or stationary for extended periods, generally 50% or more of the workday.
• Review documents, organize financial data, and verify information for accuracy.
• Analyze and work with detailed financial and accounting records.
