Deputy Sheriff I/II

Candidate Options Deputy Sheriff I: Entry‑level with no or minimal prior law‑enforcement experience. Pay rate $31.36 per hour. Deputy Sheriff II: Candidates must hold a current Nevada POST Category I Certificate (or a reciprocal certificate). Minimum salary $35.08, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities Detention Conduct daily head counts, cell and pod checks, and move inmates for court appearances, medical care, and visits. Perform inmate intake and release, including searches, booking questionnaires, fingerprinting, photography, and processing of bail and phone access. Ensure safety of inmates and staff by conducting searches for weapons, drugs, and contraband, and by monitoring inmate activity. Handle health and welfare issues: provide adequate food, clothing, medicine, and living arrangements; inspect living conditions for compliance. Provide customer service: screen visitors and telephone calls, directing callers to appropriate personnel. Transport inmates to and from court, providing security and updating legal paperwork. Provide first aid, triage inmates for physician visits, and document medical issues. Transport inmates for extraditions and process related documents. Civil Process Locate and serve subpoenas, summonses, warrants, orders, restraining orders, and writs of restitution. Execute court orders to attach liens to property, bank accounts, securities, and other real or personal property. Court Services Organize probable cause forms, make copies, and deliver to District Attorney and courts. Retrieve criminal complaint copies, prepare logs for court appearances, and prepare court copies. Prepare court lists and coordinate with court clerks. Provide court security as required. All Assignments Attend required training for state and department requirements. Provide first aid as needed. Operate a motor vehicle safely and effectively. Use standard office equipment, including computer. Represent the County with dignity, integrity, and cooperation. Preserve crime scenes, collect evidence, and handle evidence properly. Act as coroner as defined under NRS 259.020. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Age 21 years or older. U.S. citizen at time of testing. No convictions in which registration is required under NRS 207.090 or 207.152. No DUI conviction within the last five years. No conviction for domestic violence. No drug use or sales within the last five years. Required Knowledge Public relations and customer service principles. County, state, and federal laws related to police activities. Effective interrogation techniques. Criminal investigation principles and techniques. Weaponry and safety practices. Safety and security policies and procedures. First aid and basic CPR methods. County geography. Computer proficiency with standard and specialized software. Standard office practices and procedure documentation. Effective oral and written communication. Required Skills Developing and implementing policies, procedures, and safety standards. Interpreting, applying, and explaining state and local regulations. Handling adverse situations with firmness and courtesy. Preserving crime scenes and collecting evidence. Operating a vehicle safely in normal and emergency situations. Using firearms, impact weapons, and chemical agents safely. Determining and executing proper action under emergency conditions. Using initiative and independent judgment within policy guidelines. Communicating effectively in oral and written forms. Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Valid Class C driver’s license. Category 3 Nevada POST certification obtained during employment. CPR and first aid certification within six months of employment. Physical Demands & Working Environment The position requires traversing difficult terrain, restraining suspects, running, climbing, standing, squatting, and sitting for prolonged periods, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, handling stressful situations, reading printed materials and computer screens, and communicating verbally. Exposure to traffic conditions and external environments may occur during travel between offices. Conditions of Employment Employment is contingent upon maintaining all required licenses and certificates in active status. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background and screening.
