General Liability Claims Specialist

Job Description This individual contributor role operates under moderate direction and within defined authority limits. The position manages commercial claims of moderate to high complexity within the General Liability line of business. Responsibilities include investigating, evaluating, and resolving claims in accordance with company protocols while meeting quality, timeliness, and customer service standards. The role requires regular communication with customers and insureds, and may support designated accounts. A flexible, hybrid work schedule is offered, requiring two days in a CNA office per week. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Manage an inventory of moderate to high complexity and exposure commercial claims by following company protocols to verify policy coverage, conduct investigations, develop and employ resolution strategies, and authorize disbursements within authority limits. Provide exceptional customer service by interacting professionally and effectively with insureds, claimants, and business partners, achieving quality and cycle‑time standards, providing regular updates, and responding promptly to inquiries. Verify coverage and establish timely and adequate reserves by reviewing and interpreting policy language, partnering with coverage counsel on complex matters, estimating potential claim valuation, and following company claim‑handling protocols. Conduct focused investigations to determine compensability, liability, and covered damages by gathering pertinent information, taking recorded statements, and working with experts or other parties as necessary. Establish and maintain working relationships with internal and external partners, suppliers, and experts to effectively resolve claims. Authorize and ensure claim disbursements within authority limits by determining liability and compensability, negotiating settlements, and escalating to manager as appropriate. Contribute to expense management by resolving claims timely and accurately, selecting and overseeing resources, and delivering high‑quality service. Identify and address subrogation/salvage opportunities or potential fraud by evaluating facts and referring to appropriate Recovery or SIU resources. Achieve quality standards on every file by following company guidelines, meeting quality and cycle‑time targets, and ensuring proper documentation. Maintain compliance with state/local regulatory requirements by staying current on commercial insurance laws, regulations, and trends for the line of business. Mentor or coach less experienced claim professionals as needed. Perform additional duties as assigned. Reporting Relationship Typically reports to a Manager or above. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Solid working knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, coverage, and claim practices. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships and present information to customers and senior management. Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative business relationships with internal and external partners. Ability to exercise independent judgment, solve moderately complex problems, and make sound business decisions. Investigative experience with an analytical mindset and critical‑thinking skills. Strong work ethic, time‑management, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment at high productivity levels. Developing ability to negotiate low to moderately complex settlements. Adaptability to changing environments. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn business‑related software. Ability to value diverse opinions and ideas. Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience. Typically a minimum of four years of relevant experience, preferably in claim handling. Candidates who have successfully completed the CNA Claim Training Program may be considered after two years of claim handling experience. License & Certifications Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an Insurance Adjuster License within 90 days of hire, where applicable. Professional designations such as CPCU are a plus. Compensation & Benefits In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $54,000 to $103,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.
