The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation/M&O is looking for an Equipment Operator, Journey 1/2 in Akutan to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Salary Information:

Equipment Operator Journey 1: $32.32 / hourly - OT Eligible

Equipment Operator Journey 2: $34.18 / hourly - OT Eligible

What You Will Be Doing:

• Equipment Operator Journey 1: The incumbent will perform equipment operations commensurate with a journey-level operator. The main focus of this position will be to utilize various types of light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of State of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure. Use of heavy-duty equipment will be in a training capacity.
• Equipment Operator Journey 2: The incumbent will perform equipment operations commensurate with a journeyman level operator. The main focus of this position will be to utilize various types of heavy equipment to perform maintenance activities. Shift work may be required.

This position with the Akutan Maintenance Station crew is located in Akutan, Alaska. The crew operates and maintains our airport and highways in all conditions, year around. Whether plowing snow in near "white-out" conditions; repairing asphalt; maintaining airfield lighting and signs; or training for any emergency that may occur. Our ideal candidate will thrive in the variety of tasks and the teamwork that this busy environment offers. Opportunity exists to travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.

Who We Are Looking For:

To be successful in this position, the selected applicant will possess the following core competencies:

• Transportation: Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road including cost and limits.
• Vehicle operation: Knowledge of procedures for operating motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, or watercraft.
• Problem solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
• Eye-hand coordination: Accurately coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).

Special Note:

Equipment Operator Journey 1: As a condition of employment, the incumbent shall obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23) within 180 days of hire and shall comply with all provisions set forth in the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA). Failure to obtain the required licensure within the specified timeframe shall result in termination of employment.

Equipment Operator Journey 2: Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in accordance with 49 CFR Part 383.23, as well as compliance with the most recent Equipment Operator Flex Letter of Agreement (LOA), is required.

A valid Tanker (N) endorsement is required at the time of appointment or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of hire under a conditional memorandum. Management may also require the incumbent to obtain a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement; however, this is not required at the time of appointment.

The incumbent must successfully complete all pre-employment requirements applicable to CDL and safety-sensitive positions, including a background check and pre-employment drug testing. Upon appointment, the incumbent shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with policy.

Where applicable, the incumbent shall obtain and maintain firearms qualification.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

This position requires the use of firearm or ammunition. If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence you may not hold a position in this job class in accordance with the Federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208).

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Equipment Operator Journey 1 or at the Equipment Operator Journey 2 level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
