Description: The unit is responsible for Labor and Delivery and Postpartum patients. There are 4 Labor and Delivery beds and 6 postpartum beds. There is 1 triage bed available. C-sections are performed in the operating room. Patient ratios are 1:1 when being induced and 1:2 for postpartum. Common diagnoses include hyperbilirubinemia, preterm labor, and triage. RNs monitor telemetry and are required to read their own strips. There is a Charge Nurse on each shift, who may take an assignment if necessary. OB/Neonatologists and Anesthesia are on-call, not in-house. Respiratory therapy equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, and Airvo. RNs are required to troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment, with RT on-call 24/7. The Electronic Fetal Monitoring system used is GE. Scheduling allows for rotation between day and night shifts. Weekend requirements include working every third weekend and every third holiday. Floating to Med-Surg and Pediatrics may be necessary when the OB unit is slow. Response time for call or standby is within 1 hour. Communication, motivation, and approachability are essential attributes for success in this role.
