Responsibilities The surgical first assistant assists the surgeon during the procedure with retraction, skin suturing, tying, hemostasis, and other first assistant skills according to the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and practices. Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Participates in providing quality care by supporting quality improvement initiatives. Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains a sterile field. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited surgical first assistant program (including didactic and clinical practicum) with certification as a Surgical First Assistant or completion of a program meeting the minimal requirements of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Certified Surgical First Assistant Certification (CSFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or have been employed to practice surgical technology before September 1. Five or more years’ experience as a surgical technologist, including one year of current operating room experience as a surgical first assistant. BLS certification obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care. #J-18808-Ljbffr
