PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN III/CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

Position Overview Emergency Psychiatric Technician III – Correctional Health Services, Los Angeles County. The role is open for an initial period of up to 90 days with potential conversion to permanent County employment. Candidates will be evaluated on performance during this period; passing the assessment will lead to a permanent appointment. Responsibilities Interview clients, their families, and friends to gather information on the client’s environment, personality, and relationships that may affect the client’s illness and treatment. Make program services referrals for persons identified as mentally ill. Coordinate or conduct audits of client records for compliance with documentation guidelines. Participate in multidisciplinary team conferences, provide and document continuing care, and collaborate with other mental health staff to develop effective treatment plans. Provide direct client care within the scope of practice guidelines, complete required documentation, update the treatment team on client progress, and provide referrals and linkage to community resources. Provide consultation to community agencies on the use of mental health and support services offered by department-owned clinics, in‑patient facilities, and contractors. Provide in‑service training to departmental staff and volunteers on identifying and treating mentally disordered individuals, crisis intervention principles, and assaultive behavior management. Administer prescribed medications to clients, either orally or by injection, in acute psychiatric settings. Participate as a Crisis Response Team member in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Coordinate the activities of a Psychiatric Mobile Response Team or similar service team with law enforcement, courts, schools, and other agencies. Serve on the Homeless Outreach and Engagement Team, providing initial assessments and linking homeless mentally ill individuals to mental health services. Coordinate work of psychiatric technicians or others to deliver mental health services at inpatient or outpatient facilities as needed. Coordinate or develop psychological rehabilitation programs for chronically and persistently mentally ill clients. Lead and provide technical supervision to lower‑level psychiatric technicians and support staff. Serve as a mental health service gatekeeper at the Mental Health ACCESS and Telecommunications Center, performing triage of callers and dispatching responses. Prepare and sign the application for immediate 72‑hour detention of disturbed psychiatric clients when authorized by the Office of Medical Director. Minimum Qualifications At least two (2) years of experience at the Psychiatric Technician II level within the County of Los Angeles. A valid and active license as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. A valid California Class "C" Driver's License, or an alternative transportation arrangement to perform essential job functions. Physical capability to lift over 25 pounds, perform bending, twisting, and work on irregular surfaces as required by a Class "4 - Arduous" physical requirement. Additional Information The position offers up to a 20% recruitment and retention bonus for full‑time Psychiatric Technician III positions hired by Correctional Health Services.
