About This Role A GIS Designer at HBK Engineering is a position that combines advanced GIS technical expertise with leadership and mentorship responsibilities. This role involves working closely with project teams consisting of engineers, designers, and field personnel while taking on increased responsibilities in design tasks, project research, and quality assurance. The position requires using GIS and database applications to model utility distribution systems while providing mentorship to junior team members and performing peer reviews of small GIS projects for conformity and quality assurance. Office location: Chicago or Oak Brook, IL What You’ll Do Work closely with project teams consisting of engineers, designers, and field personnel on design, modification, analysis, and constructability of projects Work with data sets, CAD conversions, map creations, and data management for advanced GIS mapping projects Produce and update overlay maps to show information boundaries, utility locations, and topographic features on various base maps or at different scales Determine scales, line sizes, and colors to be used for hard copies of computerized maps using plotters Identify and compile database information to create maps in response to complex client and project requests Work with aerial photographs to identify topographical features for mapping accuracy Enter GPS data, legal deeds, field notes, and land survey reports into GIS workstations to transform information into graphic land descriptions Compile and digitize electric utility construction as‑builts and other technical documents Calculate latitudes, longitudes, angles, areas, and other information for mapmaking using survey field notes or reference tables Check all layers of maps to ensure accuracy, identifying and marking errors and making necessary corrections Provide mentorship to junior team members in GIS techniques and best practices May perform or assist with basic field data collection Use GIS and database applications to model utility distribution systems Perform GIS troubleshooting activities and implement corrective action solutions Perform detailed design tasks for complex GIS projects Prepare comprehensive project documents and technical reports Perform moderate computations and analysis for project requirements Perform project research and investigations to support design decisions Perform peer review of small GIS projects for conformity and quality assurance What You’ll Bring High school diploma or GED certificate Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Geographic Information Systems preferred Field data collection and survey experience preferred 5–15 years of GIS experience preferred Experience working with and willingness to learn new GIS software and spatial databases Understanding of cartographic design principles and modern mapping techniques Ability to create and maintain spatial data sets; prepare maps, figures, and exhibits Valid driver’s license (CDL not required) Understanding of client standards, guidelines, and systems Self‑motivated and proactive attitude with good interpersonal communication skills Ability to effectively communicate with diverse teams and stakeholders Ability to perform outdoor standing and/or walking work every day Physical capability to move about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways Ability to lift up to 40 pounds Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time Ability to sit, kneel, and squat on a daily basis with minimal frequency of kneeling and squatting Hand‑eye coordination necessary to operate surveying equipment and take measurements What You’ll Get Advanced GIS role with increased technical responsibilities and leadership opportunities Professional development in utility distribution system modeling and advanced GIS applications Mentorship opportunities with junior team members Quality assurance responsibilities including peer review of GIS projects Experience in detailed design tasks and project research activities Advanced training in GIS troubleshooting and corrective action implementation Leadership development through project document preparation and technical reporting Clear career progression pathway within the HBK Organization’s GIS Track Opportunity to work on complex projects requiring moderate computations and analysis Field data collection experience and outdoor work opportunities Advanced preparation for senior GIS roles and project leadership positions Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability and employer paid life insurance. Tuition reimbursement and other role‑specific company paid professional development opportunities are also available Compensation Range The anticipated compensation for this position is USD $27.00 per hour – USD $34.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
