Food Service Worker II Location: San Antonio State Hospital, 6711 S New Braunfels, San Antonio, TX. Department: Health & Human Services Commission – Food Services Operations. Salary: $2,639.75–$3,404.91 per month. Shift: Day (primary); additional: Day (First); Evening (Second). Regular, Full‑time, Nonexempt. Job Overview Perform routine (journey‑level) food service work on a designated shift and rotation in the central kitchen and/or at a satellite kitchen/serving area. Responsibilities include preparing, portioning, distributing, and serving food for regular and therapeutic diets, sanitizing equipment, and maintaining a clean work environment. Work under moderate supervision with limited initiative. Additional duties include participation in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or location changes. Essential Job Functions Attend work regularly and may be scheduled for specific shift or rotating shift, extended shift, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy. Assist in preparation and portioning of food for special diets following food service procedures. Prepare scheduled snacks and supplements and maintain supply of snack items. Participate in the distribution of food in a safe and sanitary manner as per food service policies. Assist in serving food by following food service procedures. Follow proper food handling in accordance with food service procedures, state, federal, and HACCP guidelines. Receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors. Prepare necessary paperwork promptly and correctly. Follow procedures for sanitation and storage of dishes and food service equipment. Follow required sanitation procedures for cleaning kitchen, stock room, food preparation areas, and satellite areas. Observe safety procedures and practices. Train or assist in training new kitchen employees to ensure a knowledgeable staff. Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activation. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of food preparation methods. Knowledge of food storage standards and sanitation regulations. Skills in operating and sanitizing food service equipment. Ability to prepare and serve food. Ability to clean dining, serving, and food preparation areas per facility standards. Ability to maintain accurate records. English literacy and speaking. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Basic math skills for cooking/preparation. Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients. Certifications & Licensure Must possess or be willing to obtain a food safety certification (ServSafe, Learn to Serve, or Food Protection Manager) within the first six months of employment. If required to drive, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days; out‑of‑state drivers must provide a certified driving record. Initial Screening Criteria Paid or unpaid experience in food service work, with 6 months preferred. Prior paid work experience of any kind required. Background & Eligibility Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE). Male applicants 18‑25 must be registered with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years old (21 for certain centers). Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital procedures related to immunizations is required. Employees may be required to wear a mask if unvaccinated for influenza. Work Hours and Conditions Flexibility in work hours may be required. The position may require overtime and/or extended hours.
