Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) assists emergency personnel and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an emergency vehicle delivering emergency personnel to the scene and victims to the hospital; Drive ambulance to specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher; Administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings; Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures; Attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge; Comfort and reassure patients; Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange reception of victims, or to receive instructions for further treatment; Coordinate work with other emergency medical team members or police or fire department personnel; Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with infectious disease, and report case to proper authorities; Immobilize patients for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport, using backboard or other spinal immobilization device; Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenish first aid equipment and supplies; Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment; Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as suction, airway management, or AED monitoring, during ambulance ride; May provide training and/or direct the work of Emergency Medical Technicians.
There are anticipated vacancies at the Erie County Department of Health and the salary starts $52,364 (2025) annually. If you pass the examination, your name will appear on the continuous eligible list for one year. After one year, your name will be removed from the list. You may apply for retest at six month intervals.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of application: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school general equivalency diploma and one (1) year of full-time equivalent experience as an Emergency Medical Technician. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The candidate must possess NYS Department of Health Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and
- The candidate must possess a valid CPR certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and
- Must successfully comply with annual skill and didactic credentialing, training and/or review as outlined by the Western Regional Medical Advisory Committee and maintain certifications for the duration of employment; and
- The candidate must possess a valid Class D New York State Driver's License at the time of appointment and maintain such license for the duration of employment.

Plan Details:
- Value Plan (POS 204): This is the default plan for all employees hired after January 1, 2018. These employees are required to contribute 15% of the plan's premium through pre-tax payroll deductions.
- Enhanced Plan (POS 202) & Core Plan (POS 203): Employees opting for these plans must pay the difference in cost between their selected plan and the employer's contribution toward the Value Plan.
- Bronze High Deductible Plan (POS 8200): Available to all employees regardless of hire date, the County covers 100% of the premium for this plan. It features a $2,000 individual / $4,000 family deductible and includes preventive services covered in full.
Dental insurance is provided through EmblemHealth. The County pays 100% of single coverage and 90% of family coverage, up to an annual allotment.
Erie County offers a Health Flexible Spending Account (FSA), allowing employees to set aside up to a maximum amount set by the IRS each year in pre-tax dollars for eligible medical, dental, and vision expenses.
Holidays: 11 paid holidays annually.
Vacation Leave: Starts at 10 days per year, increases to up to 30 days with seniority. Can be accrued up to 20 days; unused vacation is payable upon separation. Up to 60 hours of unused vacation time can be sold back annually, subject to minimum balance requirements.
Sick Leave: Accrues at 13 days per year (Four hours per pay period). Unused sick leave may be accrued up to 225 days.
Personal Leave: Four days per year.
Bereavement Leave: Up to four paid days for immediate family.
Eligible full-time employees are enrolled in the New York State and Local Employees' Retirement System (ERS), administered by the Office of the State Comptroller. An employee's tier is determined by their date of membership; employees who joined on or after April 1, 2012, are classified as Tier 6 members.
Tier 6 members are required to contribute between 3% and 6% of gross reportable earnings for all years of public service. Contribution rates are determined based on annual wage and are adjusted annually on April 1.
Tier 6 members become vested after 5 years of credited service, with an option to retire as early as age 55.
Erie County offers a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan administered by Corebridge Financial (formerly AIG/VALIC). This plan is a voluntary, employee-funded program designed to supplement an employee's retirement savings. Employees can contribute up to 100% of their salary on a pre-tax or Roth after-tax basis, not exceeding the annual IRS limit. (For 2025, the contribution limit is $23,500.)
Employees work a standard schedule that includes a paid half-hour lunch period each workday. Eligible employees receive overtime pay at one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked beyond their standard work schedule. Alternatively, employees may opt to accrue compensatory time in lieu of overtime pay, up to a maximum of 80 hours.
Employees working non-standard shifts receive an additional $1.50 per hour.
Transit Commuter Benefits Account: Save on commuting expenses, including Metro trains and buses, commuter trains, ridesharing, etc. with a pre-tax paycheck deduction. Employees may deduct an IRS-set amount each month for combined commuter highway vehicle transportation and transit passes.
Parking Commuter Benefits Account: Save on work-related parking expenses with a pre-tax paycheck deduction. Employees may deduct an IRS-set amount each month for qualified parking.
