GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Access Coach at Johnson C. Smith University promotes equitable access to the University's academic, residential, and co-curricular programs by coordinating reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and applicable federal and state regulations. In collaboration with faculty, academic advisors, administrators, and other campus partners, the Access Coach engages students through i providing individualized access coaching that promotes self-advocacy, executive functioning, and student independence. The Access Coach maintains accurate and confidential records, and serves as a resource to students, faculty, and staff to ensure equitable access and institutional compliance. This position reports to the Director of ADA Compliance and Accommodations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Monitors a caseload of students approved for or seeking disability accommodations through scheduled meetings, proactive outreach, and ongoing communication, responding to student questions, concerns.

Responds to early alerts submitted by faculty and other campus personnel through timely outreach, assessment, and referral, providing appropriate interventions and support for students, particularly those with approved accommodations or identified accessibility needs.

Documents student interactions, accommodation requests, case notes, and outcomes within the University's case management and student information systems while maintaining confidentiality of disability-related records.

Advocates on behalf of students by promoting equitable access to academic, residential, and co-curricular programs while fostering an inclusive campus environment.

Provides individualized access coaching through one-on-one or group sessions that promote self-advocacy, executive functioning, organization, time management, communication skills, and student independence.

Supports students in identifying and overcoming disability-related barriers that may affect academic performance, campus engagement, persistence, and overall student success.

Assists students in developing strategies for effective learning, self-management, organization, and appropriate use of approved accommodations.

Collaborates with faculty, academic advisors, and campus partners to facilitate the implementation of approved accommodations and promote equitable access to academic programs and University services.

Supports First-Year Seminar instructors by serving as a resource on disability accommodations, accessibility, and student support services while collaborating to promote an inclusive and accessible learning environment for first-year students.

Consults with faculty and staff regarding accessibility best practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 requirements.

Connects students with appropriate campus and community resources, including tutoring, counseling, health services, assistive technology, career development, and other support services to promote student success and well-being.

Works collaboratively with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Counseling Services, Information Technology, Facilities Management, Career Development, and other campus partners to remove barriers to access and support student success.

Assists in the development, preparation, and updating of accessibility resources, accommodation procedures, educational materials, and departmental communications.

Develops and maintains accurate, organized, and confidential student records that support accommodation services, institutional compliance, and student success initiatives.

Utilizes student engagement and accommodation data to identify trends, evaluate intervention effectiveness, and support institutional initiatives related to accessibility, persistence, retention, and equitable student outcomes.

Assists with educational programming, outreach initiatives, and training faculty, staff, and students related to disability awareness, accessibility, assistive technology, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and inclusive practices.

Works some evenings and weekends as required.

Performs duties unique to specific departments or colleges, as needed.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs general administrative office work as required, including, but not limited to, preparing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, reviewing professional journals, attending and conducting meetings, etc.

Serves on university committees

Performs other assigned duties as required to meet organizational needs
